I am 21 but my dad still makes me text or ring before I leave to go on a hack and text or ring when I get back. He says he doesn't trust the muppets on the road and just wants to make sure I get back ok, which is fair enough I suppose.

So parents do you...

not a parent but kids at my yard are not allowed to hack on there own but are allowed to in groups, we have ALL off road hacking, we don;t touch a road. The youngest are 12 but usually go out with older kids of around 16/17

One 17 year old at my yard is allowed to hack alone, she rides a completely bombproof horse and to be honest loads of groups of kids ride out behind her anyway!

They all give us an idea where they are going, take mobile phones but do have a restricted time limit.

I can ride completely on my own (16 years old) as long as I take my phone YO knows sort of where I am going and would phone if I am a while but I usually ride with friends ....much nicer

I'm 14. I was first allowed to hack alone when I was 13. I get dropped off at the yard and get left to my own devices for about 3-4 hours. I'm not allowed to go on lots of roads but parents don't mind road crosses or quiet lanes. My mum calls me after I've been at the yard for about 3 hrs or I text her to be picked up

I usually tell the folks if I am going to hack or school, but they are pretty relaxed about it now

I started hacking on my own at 13, i did not have bombproog horses or ponies, but was neccesity as there was no one else to hack out with.

I now have two 13 years old that ride my pony, I can not believe the lack of common sense. It does not matter how many times they are told something, they know better and I am stupid. It drives me insane I only say things to keep them and my pony safe.

I've answered in relation to me and my (non horsey) parents.

I had Misty from 16yo and pretty much always hacked alone. I always told someone (be it parents of flat, ates at uni) where I was going and roughly how long it would take inc tacking up/untacking etc and asked that if I was 1/2hr over that they phoned unless I called to say I was running late.

I think it's important regardless of how old you are that someone knows where you are etc and I still will tell someone once I've got my own again and I'll be atleast 22yo by then.

I've been verbally abused and even had Misty hit out hacking and had that resulted in an accident if no one knew where I was hacking I'd have been in real trouble.

The kids are allowed to hack on their own, but I want to know where they are going and which route they plan to take. That way if they are late and haven't phoned, I know where to go to look for them. I don't really like to phone them whilst they are riding, on the basis I hate taking calls myself whilst riding.

i think your dad is just been protective of his little girl and wants her to be safe..... even the carefulest of drivers can cause an accident .. hes only on the look out for you .. and your horse

Times have changed.... I am over 40 now (only just) but grew up in the days of no mobile phones and all day picnic hacks. I would head off to the yard on my bike before the rest of the house was up and the only rule was I had to be back before dinner (normally 6pm) Roads were quiter and it was generally safer to be a child on your own (although I was flashed in the woods once and chased him on my pony, was funny at the time, the thought of a trouserless man running away through the brambles and nettles

- Ouch) I don't have children but I know that if I did I would want to know where they were going and when they got back, not in an over protective way, just from the safety angle.

i always phonee my hubby when returning from a ride just to let him know i returned safely, your dad is just concerned for your safety, stick with it and at least he shows he cares.

Your post has made me realise I'm quite relaxed about my daughter hacking out alone and I haven't really kept tabs on her for years. However when she goes out in her car I always want her to text me when she gets there!

I guess I trust the horse more than the car!
