Hi please answer regarding rug cleaning - also if anyone can help me please post how much you expect to pay and how far you would travel to get rug cleaned.

Thank you so much

Ours get picked up, so no travel involved. The bills vary greatly depending on the number of rugs and whether repairs are needed. In all honesty, it would probably be cheaper to throw them away each year and get new ones on sale, but I hate the disposable society, so I have some really ancient rugs worth about nothing that I use and get cleaned each year for about £10 or so.

I assume the poll is intended for large heavy turnout rugs and for a professional clean?

I use rug liners under my rugs, so I can wash them at home in my 9kg washing machine quite regularly. I'll also wash my stable rugs, fleeces and stable sheets at home when they get a horrid level of stable stains on them - which is about once a month - I have rubber matting so the rugs gets quite dirty, quite quickly. I'll also wash the majority of my turnout rugs at home, once a year and re-proof them at home. I always buy rugs with detatchable neck covers to accommodate washing in my machine.

The only rugs I'll send away annually are my two very big (6'6" & 6'9") super heavweight combo turnouts (Fal Goliath and Bucas Power). These are collected from our yard and I pay £15 each for a wash and re-proof, and delivery back to the yard. I am sure I could get it much cheaper if I delivered the rug myself, but I prefer the convenience so will pay the bit extra for my two super weight rugs.

I take mine to a local (unmanned) launderette... £5.50 and can fit two heavy weights with necks in one machine :0)

Depends on the horse, stable rugs (if they wear a different one) will be cleaned as and when they need it, the sheet underneath will be done every few weeks but if the horse manages to get it too dirty it will be done more often.
I pay £7.50 for a wash and extra if one needs a repair or for turnout rugs reproofing. Most turnout rugs get done in spring so they can be put away clean ready for the next winter.

mine are cleaned and re-proofed annually and the most i pay for this is about £15:00 a rug, the company I use also offer a collection and delivery service

turn-outs - anunally

lw top sheets (field mate likes to eaty my horse so i use a LW top sheet to save mending the expensive HW turnout) i have 3 of and they get cleaned every time i have to mend them - so about once a month

under rugs/liners - whenever i think they feel skanky - so about every 2 months or so

My horses live in their turnouts so I dont have stable rugs.

The HW's go in the spring to be washed and reproofed but I cant remember how much this costs. I think it was around £15 each last time.

The under rugs, MW's and coolers go in the wash, the under rugs whenever they are dirty and the MW's again in the spring.

My rainsheet has never been washed but this is only worn occasionally. I dont want it to lose its waterproofness.

We wash our own in a cement mixer. Thye mixer costs about £150 for an electric, lots of cold water and one bucket of hot with cheap washing powder in. Bit of effort but cement mixer will pay for itself in a year. (and you can make cincrete if you need to)

I've selected biannually but some rugs are only cleaned once a year.

Each rug gets cleaned professionally at least once a year. Turnout rugs are reproofed when they get cleaned. Any damage is also repaired. I pay around £10 for cleaning and £7 for reproofing.

I wash my fleece rugs (which are used as light weight stable rugs) in the washing machine at home.

I have a number of old rugs I have held onto over the years. I still have the same rambo rug I bought for my first horse in 1996. It has had five different horses in it (and unbelieveably two of which have died wearing it). I know most people wouldn't do that but its a matter of expense. It was a really expensive rug to buy, and has lasted brilliantly. I've just had it washed and reproofed, its only about the third time in all these years! I really don't believe rugs need reproofing every year.

The lightweight stable rugs and fleeces I bung in the washing machine to save money.

Dad has put the jet wash on my other turnout rugs over the years and got them fantastically clean. I rarely send them off to be cleaned as I think its so expensive and a bit of a rip off if I'm honest.

We have repaired rugs many times before on my Mum's old Singer sewing machine but the needle isn't really strong enough to penetrate the material and to repair rugs you really need an industrial sewing machine.

mine have never been washed.
If they're dirty I let them dry off and then use elbow greese and a dandy brush.
They actually don't get that muddy either, but then they're rarely used.

Local laundry in norfolk - £6.50 for wash and dry. Plus another £6.50 for proofing - will repair. Regular laundry washed on friday (dirty wash day) ready on Monday - simples:D!

Mine was really really expensive this year at £20 per rug for wash and reproof.I travelled 20 mins, they go on a wednesday and return the following week. I wanted them done before the yard lot went off as it was getting late in the year and I wanted her clipped. When done by yard manager they are collected by a company and they charge £7 per rug for wash and reproof.

edited to add these were turnouts with full necks

Clean my heavy turnouts myself a couple of times a yr down the launderette, stable rugs, fly rugs, liners, fleeces, waffles, rainsheets etc etc are all done at home in the machine, but then my biggest rug is only a 6ft rainsheet so easily fits in my own machine. Don't use detergent on turnouts and never have and never lose waterproofing, cold wash with a extra rinse cycle and they come out looking like new yr after yr, i only have to replace/repair one ponies rugs continually and thats because she lets the others hang off her and rip them, the boys rugs never get ripped *sigh* Do all my own repairs with heavy duty needles and thread, Stormsure glue and patches.

Under sheets weekly, fleeces, thermatex, thin stable rugs as and when needed so prob every other week. Turn outs go off for cleaning once a year and reproofing and stable rugs go off 2 - 3 weeks in the winter. I have back up for the med and heavy stable rugs now so can swap them around. Cost me £15 for clean £20 for reproof. I also can't stand it when my stable rugs get truly manky - which they did last year with being in so much for the snow. Hence having bought back up's this year!!

I find it hard to answer than one as

depends on
