Poll; Riding Whilst Pregnant

[ QUOTE ]
BUT (playing Devil's advocate - and with no threats of personal violence) Lizzie Purbrick was having a gentle hack round the fields at home on her advanced horse when it bucked her off out of the blue and she miscarried at 4 months........
Anyone can fall off, anytime, off anyhorse.

The figure for misscarriage is 1:4 who's to say she wasn't going to misscarry anyway.
Its such fine line and I understand peoples concerns for the unborn baby but riding in early pregnancy (and even falling off to an extent) will not pay detriment. Up until 12 weeks the fetus is well within the pelvic cavity so protected by a layer of bone. The uterus would not emerge out of the pelvis till at least 20 weeks pregnanct.
Pregnancy women can not put their lives on hold yes take it easier and be more sensible. The bets way for a pregnant woman to stay healthy is to continue keeping fit and if this is done by horse riding there is nothing to suggest that should be stopped.

The 1 in 4 statistic is only true for early pregnancies i.e. pre 8 weeks, when a lot of people aren't even aware they are pregnant. At 4 months (16 weeks) the figure for miscarriages is far far far lower than at teh early stages, the vast majority of women who make it to 4 months will go full term

Well thank you for complimenting my drama skills, i've seen quite alot of forum flouncing and I thought why not give it a bash myself!

I rode with both pregnancies, the first up until 8 months (but the final 4 weeks of that I kept to the school and fields belonging to the yard so I could be seen) and until about 6 months with the second (I was much bigger second time and started to catch my bump on the pommel). I competed in dressage and ridden and in-hand showing classes with both as well as normal hacking and a little cross country for fun only.

However, it must be an individual choice. It worked for me but may not for someone else. I think listening to your body and your heart will win every time. If its uncomfortable physically or if you have the slightest doubts don't do it!

Oh my! Someone just like me - how refreshing. They say patience is a virtue - we must both be very virtuous.

I totally agree but in my job I do see women misscarrying at 16 weeks plus so am totally awaree that it can happen, so again who is to say that someone has misscarried due to a fall. Its one of those things that most people who misscarry will never know. The vast majority of misscarriages late and early are nothing to do with what the mother has done whilst pregnant and are just nature taking action against a fetus that may not otherwise survive for one reason or another.

ETS the 1:4 statistic is actually true up to 12 weeks gestation

I stand corrected on the 1 in 4 then - the material I have says up to 8 weeks, I guess that is true then, but continues for a further 4. I think the likelihood of someone miscarrying following a trauma is greater than not, but yes, I do understand miscarriages do happen for other reasons and coincidence is a part of it - it would be hard to say, but as a rider, if I fell then miscarried, I would put the blame 100% on the fall from my perspective.

As do most people I'm sure so do those that misscarry after no trauma at all. Its human nature I guess.
I still stand firm with my thoughts that riding whilst pregnant is not a problem as long as someone is sensible with it and have no problem in advising pregnant women the same.
Its a tough call though and only one that the expectant mother herself can make maybe if I were to ever be pregnant my thoughts would change - who knows!!

Well, I would in theory continue riding, but only flatwork in a school and gentle hacking. Would also make sure that I only hacked in company. This is all assuming that I were comfortable enough to ride!
