Poll; Riding Whilst Pregnant

I voted no for reasons I have already stated and not going to go over old ground for the sake of posting on here. Done and dusted now.

BUT (playing Devil's advocate - and with no threats of personal violence) Lizzie Purbrick was having a gentle hack round the fields at home on her advanced horse when it bucked her off out of the blue and she miscarried at 4 months........
Anyone can fall off, anytime, off anyhorse.

Ok I couldn't resist, I have finished my 1000 lines in the corner 'I shall not have an opinion!' and YES - I admit it............I ADDICTED TO HHO!

I don't do personal violence , I am too much of a wimp!
blush.gif
Hence why I didn't get involved in the 'other' thread to many threats of being thumped in the gob for my liking

That is a very sad story, and at any time you can have a fall from even the safest of horses
frown.gif
but imo its about reducing risks, if I was pregnant, I would ride but I would stick to gentle hacks and flatwork in the school, i'm not guaranteed to not fall off
confused.gif
but less likely to than going Show Jumping and XC!

I just thought their would be a more balanced view of attitudes with 3 options giving a better idea of what people thought, I no way said the poll was wrong just a 3 way one would be more interesting

Meant to add that the reason I didn't join in with the other thread was that although I feel strongly that I shouldn't ride when I am pregnant, I don't have any strong feelings whether total strangers should or shouldn't ride. Our views are coloured by things we see, experience and read, and I wonder if a few more people, having read this thread, would now decide not to ride if they became pregnant.

I have one son but was having a big gap in riding at that time anyway (10 years) But thing if i got pregnant again i would ride until around 5 months and only on a horse i thought to be safe, and only plodding!

they told me I wuld never have children....and then along came one daughter!! I was supposedly infertile due to pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis!!!! One tube left and she still made it through! I was on the pill AS WELL!!!

Never say never lol!

We're planning to have a family in the next couple of years, and it's the main reason why I bought a very quiet, sturdy horse to bring on, rather than a finer one.
I am planning to ride her or chloe (when I get heavier!) whilst pregnant, but I won't jump at all. It all depends on my health though, and would stop if doctor advised, or if I thought I was endangering the baby.
I have to say that I trust my two horses 200%, and certainly wouldn't be riding someone else's horse (but then I don't anyway as I'm a wuss these days

).

I voted yes, I rode through both of my pregnancies. The first, up until about 7 months and the second I stopped riding at about 5 months - due to horse problem not a pregnancy reason.

Both times I only hacked and mostly with company,. kept me fit, happy and supple and I would never have a problem with anyone riding during pregnancy - it's a personal decision though.

Fair enough, FMM! I believe each mother has to make their own decision based on a wide range of different factors. I would never dream of suggesting someone ride if they didn't feel happy with the idea.

If I did get pregnant again (what a horrible thought
shocked.gif
) my decision might be different this time round due to a different horse and different circumstances. However, I don't think the stories on here would make a difference to my decision, just as knowing someone who lost a baby in a car crash would not affect my decision to drive.

I did and I fell off on a regular basis too. I also smoked like a trooper and drank like a fish. I also went bungee jumping and many other things that would be seen as deterimental.
I did'nt know I was pregnant till I was 8 1/2 months though. Even so, my son was born very healthy. He clearly was meant to be.

I answered no. I never rode as my mare had a foal at foot the year that I got pregnant. However I think it is everyones personal choice and not all pregnancies are the same. I took care of myself never smoked, drunk didn't put on excessive weight etc only to develop pre-eclampsia at 28 weeks of pregnancy resulting in my son been born at 29 weeks causing him to spend the 1st 8 1/2 weeks of his life in special care baby unit. If I had been riding this would have still happened but I might have wondered if it had contributed.

I went hunting at 5 mths pregnant, finished my national diploma at 6mths pregnant, competed right up until i found out at 7 mths! At my heaviest i was 9 stone,i had no idea i was preggie,i was in size 8 jeans before and straight after so am quite petite (well back then anyway!) i look back and cringe at what i did but i had the most straightforward pregnancy (aparty from feeling v.sick at the end) and birth you could have i think! Next time i will ride up until about 5mths depending on what horse i have and if i trust it enough,i'll play it by ear really.Luckily i new my pony well when i was pregnant,i did have to ride college horses that were slightly mad but still i didn't know then but i wouldn't of ridden them if i'd known as they were starkers!

This is about the 3rd post that I have put my two penneth worth into re pregnant riders - sorry if I'm boring you all! I rode until 5 months with the first and 7 months with the second. I am 20 weeks pregnant with number 3 and would still be riding had some pillock not crashed into my car and given me whiplash. I say each to their own, listen to your own body and don't take unnecessary risks (unless you accept the consequences).
And Fruity - you make me want to scream! I couldn't get a thigh in size 8 jeans, even when not pregnant!!!

To be honest it depends on how much you want a baby at the end of it all.
Before those who ride jump on me and accuse me of being sanctimonious let me tell you my circumstances.
Aged almost 39 I had already had three miscarriages at very early stages after infertility treatment for nearly three years so the fourth time at 5 weeks pregnant I was ordered to rest.
This unfortunately turned into several emergency rushes into hospital, then three and a half long months in there on bed rest.
It was a long hot summer and the nearest I got to a horse was seeing them in the distance when I escaped to sit on the ward fire escape to feel the sun on my face.
Eventually the twins (yes there were two) were born and two years later I was pregnant again with CCJ.
She caused me no problems at all through pregnancy and I lunged etc but never sat on a horse.. (I did receive a kick in the belly from a mare but all was well)
If you have any history of problems then I think you should not ride.
If not and you are prepared to live with anything that happens then fine.
In the end it's no one else's business if you ride/don't ride/make a baby on a horse...

I have voted I would ride when pregnant (not that I will ever get pregnant though

Ditto that!

Exactly HH - we all have to make our own decisions based on our own circumstances. If I had been given medical advice to give up riding then I would have done.

Personally, I felt it was less risky to ride than it was to lunge! And one of the most risky horse-related chores, in my eyes, is turning horses out and bringing them in, especially when in a field with other horses.

Yes - providing there were no complications with the pregnancy, I was physicaly able, i.e. no hip problems/back ache and I wasnt breaking in a wild youngster etc. I think we treat pregnancy as an illness in this country. I am sure if more peole lived healthy active lifestyles there would be less complicated births. However it is entirely a personal choice and you must remember that even the quietest horse can spook or shy.

Depends how far gone and what horse... I don't think its necessary to take risks, new life is a miracle that I personally wouldn't want to put at risk!

I think I would - not that I ever intend to get pregnant but obviously can't say for certain until I am in the situation. Most people who have said yes have said so on the proviso that they would only ride their own horse or only ride in the school/gentle hacking. In other words they will not take un-necessary risks yet are still criticised for this. How is this any different to saying 'I will still dirve but I won't go rally car racing anymore' or 'I will still go jogging but won't run marathons'. Pregnancy is not an illness, it's not a disease. Women can and are expected to work throughout their pregnancy so why shouldn't they carry on with leisure activities. The baby is actually very well protected so if you are happy and the doctor is happy what's the problem?

Aww don't take it to heart
smile.gif
. It was just a silly little poll
smile.gif
.

I think the story of your friend tying up her jods with strings sounds like a worthy story to be on here
laugh.gif
.

I put yes but I think I would be fairly careful and rather less inclined to ride any of my bosses unknown buy and sell horses (any excuse to avoid that joy of a task LOL).

I think that if I had a history of difficult pregancies or miscarrying (which thankfully I don't) I would avoid riding but otherwise I would be riding up until the point where I couldn't get my leg over the saddle any more!
grin.gif

I didn't
smile.gif
I thought i'd just try abit of forum flouncing but my drama skills aren't as well honed as I thought
grin.gif

The story was, a friend of mine (who shall remain nameless!) didn't want to buy new jods whilst she was pregnant so she tied them up with a piece of string (well it was more like thread), she had the zip undone and it was just this piece of string holding them up on the clasps and her show jacket and top were hiding the fact, anyway she was competing at local show jumping and after a couple of fences the piece of string broke
shocked.gif
she carried on but her jods slipped down her bum (like a really bad case of builders bottom) and as she was going over the fences she was showing off her bum cheeks some and a rather fetching (not) skimpy pair of undies

PMSL!!! Now how you could manage to hold back on that story is beyond me! That is a classic!!
grin.gif

I did think that your drama skills were great, and I initially took them as being as they were intended.....but then I had a moment of insecurity and wasn't so sure.

I'm not in this situation (have never been actually!) so it is difficult to say. I don't know a lot about what the risks are at various stages TBH. But, I suspect I would ride in the early stages of pregnancy, after a few months I think I would stop. I'd cut jumping/fast work out and ride a 'safe' horse.

I remember yrs ago seeing Mary King (I think it was her) doing Badminton whilst very heavily pregnant, which at the time I thought was outrageous.
