Poll: Sexing red sex-link chicks... supposed to be easy, huh?!

Arrrgh.... Last year ALL my hatched out RIR chicks grew into cock birds. So, this year, I chose sex-linked eggs to hatch so I could sex the chicks at a day old. I thought this would make things easy. Huh. This year the first two eggs to hatch from RIR x Light Sussex were def yet another two boys.

But what about this little fella that hatched yesterday - chick No. 3. Is it a Boy or Girl??? *You can tell I'm getting desperate for some good news*

It's got this distinctly darker colour across one side of its neck and 'shoulder'. Not exactly 'brown or reddy coloured' but enough that my fingers are crossed that this might, just might, be a girl.

And PS: Don't let my OH know I've had chicks on the kitchen worktops!!!! LOL.

What do the chicken hatching experts on here rekon?

I'd go with boy - he's the same colour as the sex-linked Goldtops that I hatched out and the ones that colour have turned out to be male. Having said that I run the doubtful ones on until they crow or lay - just in case

They should be clearer than that though. The RIR x LS cross needs to be the right way round for the results to be sex linked

I've just got a goldtop amber coloured male from eggs sold to me by someone who obviously didnt get the cross right way round so if yours were bought in eggs just double check things...
