I liked the KM Peyton books too...but also one called 'A Pony From the Moor' but can't remember who it was by. I particularly appreciated the fact that the heroine's horses were all half feral and she had to overcome problems with them.
And now I have my own feral herd - progress?!

My Friend Flicka - a true inspiration!! As a child. I had no interest in reading at all - I had no difficulty, just no interest - until I read 'Thunderhead', 'My Friend Flicka and 'the Green Grass of Wyoming'.
Also went on to read the Black Stallion books and then Jilly Cooper!!!!

Read and loved all of them except the last one which I haven't heard of.

My favourite ever was a very elderly book passed down by my Mum called "Ponies in Secret". My copy was lost when my parents moved house and I'm currentlyu searching for a copy. Anyone got one they could part with?

How uncanny I have been thinking of that book all day and couldn't remember what it was called. That has to be one of my favourites

Been trying to think of another set of books that I loved too, it was about a retired jockey that was sent to teach the pony club. One girl had a pony that was a 'stargazer' and another girl has a really expensive pony that was ridden in a pelham and he made her change it to a snaffle!
Any ideas?

It was the Pony Club Trilogy by (i think) josephine Pullein-thompson. Fantastic, i still have it and read it! Pony Club Challenge, Pony Club Cup and Pony Club Trek!

The girl with the stargazer was Alice, the pony was Saffron!

Everyone has forgotten the 'Jackie' books....cant remember who wrote them tho! And KM Peyton's The Wild Boy and Queen Moon was v good - poor Faithful!

What about Pancho - Story of a Horse? And War Horse.....both very good books!

Loved the Pullein-Thompson books - especially prince Among Ponies. I still have a copy of Zara. I recently gave away most of my book collection, but kept Zara. I voted for Black Beauty though, I have recently bough a new copy.

I love Drag Hunt by James Broome-Lynne and the Dick Francis books, but they are hardly childrens books!!

Monica Edwards Romney Marsha dn Punchbowl series are my favourites, what about Monica Dickens Worlds End series too? Favourite Pullein-Thompsons are Plenty of Ponies, and the Six Ponies, Pony Club Camp, Pony Club team etc series. Love K M Peytons Fly-by-Night and The Team.

Still have all mine and still collect more too!

Monica Edward's books were my favourites although I read everything I could find with a horse on the cover. In the poll above I voted for My Friend Flicka as the location in the American west really caught my imagination when I was a kid.

Ooo I got goosepimples then. I adore Jump To The Stars and Difficult Summer. I would have loved a horse like Shelta (although I do have a chestnut TB mare now

) and a horsey man like Guy

Thank you for all your votes and replies, please keep them coming! There are so many individual favourites that it was impossible to include them all in the poll options…

The result of this poll, and a more detailed look at horsey tales past and present, will appear in the next issue of Horse, on sale on 6 December, so make sure you don't miss a trip down memory lane!

You can try looking for these sort of books at boot fairs, or they are often offered on Ebay (although sometimes pricey on there)!

and particularly the K.M.Peyton ones Fly-by-Night and The Team, which was a tiny bit more grown up and very very good.

I loved them as well and confess to still having them and will read them every so often. She writes very well.

I was really torn between the Jinny series and the Jill series as I read and read and read them as I child. I think I prefer Jill books now although I think Jinny wins by a nose when I was a child!

What about the Bobby and Shelta at Bracken books (Gillian Baxter) though? I absolutely love them and still read them to this day when I need to remember exactly WHY I love working with horse

I also loved Christine Pullein Thompson, especially the series with Christina and Augusta (think that was their names). I've read all of them except Three Ponies and Shannon which I've been looking for for years...
