Does anyone elses horse suffer with this in spring/summer? Bought my horse in the November with no signs of allergy. Come spring he was bad. Suppose could have returned him to dealer but I liked him!! I stable him during the day in summer to keep him out of the pollen as much as possible. I have tried most products on the market but havn't found one that really works. Vet has confirmed allergy and prescribed two types of tablets (very expensive and not covered on insurance). I think they helped a bit but not as much as I would have liked. What do you use?

never had this problem, but spoke to a lady at a show who had a nosenet which attached to the noseband and it stopped it altogether, so she said below is a link for you ....

I use the nose set too. Brilliant things. My boy hasn't head shaken since wearing it and its allowed BD/BE (with vets note) and all unaff. I've done WHP with it on, as long as you speak to steward/judge they are fine with it

My horse is fine for most of the year apart from early summer when he head shakes when hacking.
I haven't worked out exactly what he has an allergy to but when we go near the woods he throws his head in the air one minute then rubs his nose on the ground.
The poor boy!
I started using a nose net & it didn't stop him completely but reduced the shaking a lot.

Hiya,
I also made the mistake of buying a hayfever horse in November!
She has global herbs 'Pollenex', pollen tablets for horses and a herbal mix (not sure if this works but seems to keep the midgies off!). Think that the global herbs stuff works the best. The tablets are quite cheap though.

My old Tb girl is allergic to either tree or oil seed rape pollen (I think the latter, but they are both around at the same time).
She snorts, rubs her nose on her front legs, and headshakes from around easter til about the first week in June, to varying degrees.
I have tried the following;
1. Nosenet - on bridle, and on fly mask - she hated it.
2. Vaseline in nostrils - she hated it.
3. Beconase nasal spray (human) - two sprays in each nostril morning and night - works very well for her.
4. Anti inflammatories such as bute/Danilon (as rhinitis is an inflammatory response) - worked well.
5. Feeding local honey - she said she didnt like honey.
6. Nasaleze - cellulose powder - which coats the nostrils and acts as a barrier - haven't tried yet but will do as I think this may work, and won't have side effects.
7. Stabling her at peak times - disastrous as she headshakes involuntarily and can smack her head off the concrete walls.
I haven't tried any of the feed supplements, but I gave her the homeopathic pills (I forget what they were called, but 'Pollen something', and they seemed to help (but who knows?).
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the useful advice, will certainly try some of your tips!!
Samuelhorse- one type was called periactin, and the other Tegratol. One was for the allergy and other for the facial pain. One is a human tablet, the other for horses only available from vet

5 pairs of tights for £1.50 for Asda, fit over the horses nose, works a treat for my beast in summer, clean pair per ride.

My beast basically unrideable during pollen season until I found this idea, was like a miracle cure for us, helps with flies and dust as well, the end is open so he can eat and drink while out.

PM me for more details if you want .
