a desperate plea from the equine re-homing charity.....
"We have been contacted about 7 polo horses going to slaughter at the end of this week.
They are sound of wind and limb.
Aged between 2 and 18 and all ridden except the 2 year old who has not yet been broken (she is the chestnut with white face and socks).
We have the room to take them in but do not have funds to match the factory price offered for them.
If you can donate anything at all to help us save some of them, we would be very grateful."

Sorry but if I gave to every charity, I'd be broke and MY horses homeless. I've so far given this month £100 to Spana and also £100 to the Pony Santuary, since I've done this I've been unindated from pony charities asking for money. I'm a pensioner with a little bit of money behind me, so when I can afford to give some money I do. But after the deluge of pony charities wanting my money this week, the word is sorry but no I cann't afford it but the owners can.

MrsD do they have definite plans or homes for them if saved? If not, prob just best to let it happen. Sad as it is, some fool bred them then went bust evidently, tho clearly he/she is at least facing up and not passing them on cheaply.

This is such a JOKE!! I am always on the look out for cheap polo ponies that some polo players think are past it. I have already found 3 and all are still playing or hacking!!

I might even start a business!!

Is there any way we can contact the people direct and buy the ponies... i couldnt rehome any but i know of three people looking for fun kids polo ponies!!!

This makes me angry

In this neck of the woods (and I have done a few years with polo ponies) most of them seem to find good hunting homes and actually one or two have made brilliant pony club ponies :)

Polo ponies are so easy to handle, pretty unflaffable and really are good to take on - I am surprised they can't find homes for them.

ETA: I can't open the link without registering ?

How much has the factory offered? I take it these ponies are in Ireland . How can a 2yr old polo pony go for slaughter? It has not played polo yet ? Are these reg Argentinian polo ponies then ? Thought this rehoming org had plenty of funds? They sold over 200 horses last year , made a healthy profit according to their accounts and from what I heard they don't pay for their rescue horses ??

Can someone give me the contact details? I haven't got a log in. I might be able to help, and also i know a few people who may help as well.

If these horses have any kind of value then they will be bid for at auction by people who can afford something higher than meat money. You would be best not getting sucked (or is that suckered?) into this appeal for funds.

Very sad, but an indicator of current climates I suppose.

These horses are no more deserving than any others to lead safe and happy lives. However, there are many cases here in the UK that also need our help - so I'm afraid I will not donate.

I would also say that they look in healthy condition - so whilst it's still sad, there doesn't seem to be any signs of neglect, and they're just tragic victims of this relentless recession.

I also cannot support the organisation looking for donations.

Like!

Personally I find it sad that any horse goes for slaughter.

The current owners wouldn't be asking for the meat money if they had concern for the animals' welfare (just someone to take them off their hands to save the maintenance costs).

Giving them that simply makes it easier for them to fund the next set of purchases when things pick up a bit.

Sad as it is I'm not sure I'd ever pay for an animal the owner no longer could/wanted to afford just to 'save' it from slaughter.

TBH I'd rather their animals were sent for meat to (hopefully) make them think twice about future purchases they don't have funds to support.

Irresponsible barstewards.

That's a ridiculous statement to make. How can you possibly know the conditions under which these horses are being sent for destruction?

Giving them that simply makes it easier for them to fund the next set of purchases when things pick up a bit.

Again, how can you possibly know this.

Are you aware that the recession that Ireland is currently facing is on a par with the economic catastrophe being experienced in Greece?

So double standards then?

I don't think you have any grasp or understanding of circumstances that could lead people to make these very difficult and at times heartbreaking decisions.

Blinkered is the world that springs to mind!

I cannot see this forum - have they got something to hide?

I know of loads of people looking for polo ponies at the moment, so they should be very saleable

How much are the ERR adoption costs? I can't find that info on their site. I see they ask for £100 deposit to secure the horse you want to adopt, and full payment in advance of delivery.
If people from here think they could offer the polo ponies a home direct, maybe they could be given the contact details of the owners and deal with them?

Surely trained polo ponies would have a ready market, for pony club polo, new riders, university clubs, polocrosse, etc.

Sounds as though the owner just can't be bothered to try and find them new homes.

I would only ask to buy them - I am a polo player and we have the space for more. It seems such a waste! I can't really understand it... Even if I bought them and sold them on to homes that would be better. I know the local club is always after decent schoolmasters. Plus I know another woman who is looking for young polo ponies to take on.

Please can somebody give me contact details??!

Ditto that - if they are what they say there are (clean limbed) I'd buy them for meat money, transport them from Ireland and find them homes

However I've no interest in rehoming from a charity

I put a thread on about this earlier, which may be the one that was removed - I got sent a link at work and couldn't open it due to work PC restrictions.

Sorry - didn't know the organisation wasn't allowed!

So double standards then?

Not really unless I'm misunderstanding you? We can't offer to buy *all* meat horses to save them and effectively end the trade. So, whilst buying a few helps those individuals it doesn't really address the problem of people having animals they can't afford and there being a market for their carcases. These meat horses will just be replaced by others if you see what I mean.

I don't think you have any grasp or understanding of circumstances that could lead people to make these very difficult and at times heartbreaking decisions.

You're perfectly entitled to that opinion, and healthy debate is just that.

As it happens I *have* lost a job due to recession (not this one, a previous crash) and whilst I'm currently in good employment I can't guarantee that I'll stay that way (work in a very recession-sensitive industry). So I don't own a horse even though I'd love to and would, in current circs, be able to afford it comfortably.
