Be patient!
Mazzie was very sensitive in her mouth and any contact to her meant stop, so for quite a while I rode her on a very light contact, before she gradually got used to it. She was very responsive to weight, so I had to really think about my position. Took her a while to get used to 'normal' steering as opposed to neck reining, but I played her as well so kept both sides up.
oh thankyou, well ive been hacking him out for about 6months, and he's getting used to normal riding, as we say..
He's pretty collected and tall still, any tips on streching him out?
if he is a polo pony he will be used to draw reins so try them but instead of between the front legs attach to the top of the girth tabs, like ferdi Eilburg (sp) advises. the trouble people often have with ex polo ponies is that they are used to being ridden in pelhams and standing martigales etc and then all that gets taken off in one go and for them it is a bit like losing a crutch. we have had better results riding them as polo ponies first and gradulally changing the tack they are used to.
had polo ponies for years most in a snaffle or gag! they will take a contact but keep your leg on otherwise they will stop and turn. most are trained to be weight sensitive(good for your position). they usually accept the leg and hand very quickly but never quite orget the neck reining!! keep your hels down!! keep schooling as you require. they are very very versatile!!
