Would you recommend them, which saddle cloth/pad should I go for? I have on the the Stephen's sheepskin things on the saddle at the moment but just wondering if the poly pads a more comfortable?
I really like them too. They do stay put and are easy to wash. They are meant to be shock absorbing too. I prefer the saddle shaped ones but I have the butterfly one in bright blue for xc.
I don't have a Stephen's sheepskin thing so can't compare though.
I really love my poly pad, I have a brown one so it doesnt show up the muck too much. I think it is the dressage length one even if I only use it with a jump saddle. It is also the plus one thickness and is the basic rectangular shape - which is the best shape IMO.
I can bung it in the wash on the night and can be practically dry for the next evening.
[However I am waiting for some smart arse in this thread to state that adding pads to your saddle is not a substitute for a properly fitted saddle lol]
I don't really like anythink that thick, I'm old-fashioned & think if a saddle fits all you need is a thin cloth to keep the underside clean.
Short-term though if you do need some padding they are good as long as you make sure they are really pulled up into the saddle & don't make it too tight.
I got one for Christmas and it has been great...really pleased with it. You have to pull it right up into the saddle as someone mentioned previously. I have a barrel shaped Welsh and was worried about it slipping...but so far so good!
I have 2 they're great on Bailey (skinny TB) but I lose them on Ryu, they slip right back under his saddle and impossible to use if I'm jumping they slip all the way under and I almost lose them out the other side, its because hes so round and shiney.
I only ride in polypads now since my mare had back problem. They are fab. She has three. She also has gel pads and a sheepskin numnah as well. All are very good.

i personally dont like them, however high you pull them up into the saddle they always slip down and back.

I agree! My horse has got really high withers and whilst I was riding one day my friend was shouting my name. This was because the Poly Pad had slipped back so much that it was just about to fall off my horses back
Yep, same here, I dislike them, they always slip back on close contacts in my experience. They were ok on my Cob with his albion saddle though. Different circumstances i suppose!
I love Poly pads use them on everything, think it must be a little more comfortable for horse, and have a wide selection, though am always looking to buy new ones.
Have never had one slip back on any horse, so confused about that.
I don't like polypads...I've always found that they slip however I position them! I love the limpet pads http://www.limpetsaddlepad.co.uk/ I really love mine and they come in varying thickness
just got my mare one last week and i think its fab i do have a fleece pad on her aswell but after her prolite "comfort" saddlecloth rubbing i got her a polypad and so far its great hasnt moved an inch
I love poly pads - mine is nearly 8 years old and still going strong. Never slips under my jumping saddle but it tries to under my dressage saddle so just pull it forwards more.
used to always use one, but they get so hot and sweaty then my saddler said she hates them..never stay put and apparantly the big seam down the spine rubs worse than the "double" seam on a numnah etc..

do you use one of those to compete in? they look really good!

yes I have the white dressage square, it's fantastic, it just needs a wipe down after you're done. I also have a GP one for XC and SJ and it literally doesn't move!
the only one i have is when i came across it in the woods as it had come off a trekking horse from the yard down the road!!! likely however to be a combination of them not fitting all horses and slack grooms tacking up! (it now is the cats bed) I don't use htem on my mare, i use a weatherbeata numnah and for the time being a fluffy 1/2 pad as she's got some muscle to develop - afterwhich the fluffy thing will go YAY!!...
This is Louis getting a little "strong" with my friend Rachel! That is the limpet pad his wearing...lots of bucking and leaping occured just before this piccy and it didn't budge an inch!
I love them. Stay in place well and easy to wash and keep their thickeness well. I've used both saddle cloth and shaped ones both are equally as good. Currently have a shaped one. I use it nearly all the time, now my boy is older his muscule tone isn't as good and it helps pad the saddle out.
i used to swear by polypads, easy to wash, fairly quick to dry considering. lots of different styles / thickness'. never had a problem with it slipping.
then, horse went back sore and after multiple tests and lots of investigating, it turned out to be the polypad - my horse has quite a high wither so when i pulled it up at the front it would kink (as they have no shape along the top). this kink then pushed down on his spine and bruised it.
I use to use one all the time, didnt have a big seam in the middle though, it was more like a square of duvet with binding on. Still have it and would still use it if I needed to as it never caused any probs for any of my horses backs!!
Don't like poly pads, always found they slipped back on my Welsh - final straw when happened to me too, half way round a cross country course ... horse was NOT impressed.
Since then haven't used a polypad myself but OH loves them and always uses them for his horse
