Apologies if its been done before but having just blown my budget on mud control mats i am looking at alternative (cheaper) options for a field shelter and came across ones that look like poly tunnels? Im not sure if i'd get my horse near one but at the right angle the open ended design could work well against the winter weather (sorry, yes planning ahead)

Anyone have them? Any feedback from someone who knows someone with one? All help much appreciated.

Google Robinson Polytunnels for a pic, sorry i cant upload one!

Thanks

The people who sell Mud Control mats have one actually - some pics of their set up on the MudControl pages on Facebook! A Northern Polytunnels one, I think.

A few people have them that I know of - they generally get good reviews, but the biggest issues are anchoring and securing from itchy horses, the standard frame often needs a bit more reinforcement to stop them sailing off into the wind if your site is exposed. No personal experience to share though, as my lot would bring one down in seconds if they treated it as roughly as they treat the wooden shelters. Shame as I would like one, for a few reasons.

Well they do market them as suitable for using with horses. I'd want to put one in a relatively sheltered area though.
There is a field behind my house that has a polytunnel in it, which was originally put in as a lambing shed. However, the fields have been used for ages and although they fenced off the entrance to the polytunnel, the horses can get right up to the outside and it is still standing. I think they fenced the entrance up because it wasn't set up for horses going in and the entrance was a little small. They've got that in a really sheltered spot though.

I had one, it was big and green and definitely made as a horse shelter. I got it second hand and cannot for the life of me remember the name of the make.

It did last quite well, the frame was unmovable, I even hung haynets off of it. The cover didn't fair quite so well, started ripping in places after maybe 4 or 5 years, and it was second hand. But it did survive some pretty strong winter storms and 90mph winds one year...

Mine tended to use it more in the summer than winter though...

The one's I've seen, I have seriously wondered whether they'd survive the winter winds I get at my place! We get the wind blowing straight across from North Dartmoor (I'm in Devon) and I really wouldn't want to see the whole thing lifting off and blowing away! That would amuse the neighbours hugely......... :O

Also, I'm not sure how they'd survive with a determined cob with a serious bum-itch TBH.

Hi, I'm in a similar position as you from 12m ago - considering the polytunnel field shelter - did you end up buying it and how did you get on with it? Thanks!

Gawsworh track livery had one as a temporary measure. Seemed to work well, might be worth contacting them and asking about their experience.
