A friend of mine is thinking about getting a pomeranian, so I was wondering is anyone owns, or knows of any?

He is quite mature, so wants a small dog for companionship, one that is fairly easy to look after and not too high maintenance- oh and cute enough to attract the ladies

Would a pom be suitable, or is he better off looking for something else?

He is fairly fit, at home most of the time, and so would be able to train/ look after said dog fine. He would rather a puppy than an older dog though and is not over keen on going to a rescue (despite my attempts to get him to think about it).

Any advice/ suggestions/good books would be much appreciated as always

As far as I know : If you don't treat them as cuddly babies, they're quite fun and active, and suitable for first time dog owners. But they need several grooming sessions a week, and that may not sound so difficult, but doing it year in and year out...? (

And a shaved Pomeranian will probably not be the same lady-magnet.) So if he dreams about combs and brushes

, then maybe.

If he wants something small, cute and fluffy I would suggest he looked at Bolognese (brush and bath once every tenth day, after what I've heard) or Tibetan Spaniel (comb about three times a week, but it's not that much fur to go through, in comparison to the Pomranian).

Suggestions on sites to start looking at them
Bolognese http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/180 or http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bolognese.htm

Tibetan Spaniel http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/175 or http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/tibetanspaniel.htm

Much to my own disgust, I would recommend a Cavalier
crazy.gif
Easy to look after, fantastic temperaments, cute as anything and he will have a queue of ladies wanting to speak to him

I would also recommend a cavi....they are the bestest little dogs ever

, prob, the same in maintenance wise, as both have coats that need to be groomed regurlarly

Poms are ok

, but are common of little dog syndrome, if treat like a baby

There is no need to all join in now - I hasten to add that I emphatically declined the free Cavalier which my mum offered me last night

But some people love them I know

If he's happy to brush for a hr and day as the tend to shed twice a year and not in small amount's pom's shed in large clumps.
The only other dog i know that comes from the same family as the pom is the germanspitz they come in two sizes, one is the klein and the other is the mittel. klein being the smaller of the size and mittle being the larger of the size.
As for bathing a pom you only have to bath them about once a month otherwise you can damage there coat.
i'd recommend going to a breeder for a puppy as there always on the other end of a phone if help is needed.
Heres i website that has a list of pom pups for sale from breeder.
www.epupz.co.uk have a look, as prices can very alot you can also see what he would think of a spitz.
Hope that helps.

i have a pom and he's great!

defiantely a magnet as he's so much fun that guys like him but then ladies like because he's cute! he can go running across the scottish hills at full pelt for hours or he can spend all day lazying in the house only being let out to the loo.

i must say i dont groom him often...i know im supposed to but when your not in the habbit of it its easy to forget! he's not had any matting problems and vets/groomers are happy with his coat.

he isnt KC registered as he's an american pom (looks like sharron osbournes dog) which is more like a german spitz

Thank you all for your replies. He's actually a family friend of my grandad, so cant imagine him treating a dog too much like a baby.

I will mention the other breeds to him though. Thank you for all the links, I will also pass those on

Not only you - I'd prefer a pom, they've got real personality, given the chance to be a dog - and they are much cuter than a cavi

My little girl has been torn between choosing a cavi and a pom for ages (moot as we already have 2 dogs - a 7 1/2 GSD that I bought as a puppy from a hell hole - you know when you step into the wrong place and know you shouldn't, but when the pup is literally thrown at you and you can';t leave him there??? and a 10yo whippetylurchery rescue that we've had for 3 years so she's not getting one any time soon)

I have to confess to preferring the cavi personally, based purely on temperament.
