Hi, I've just ordered these on line as I have a cob that is totally over the top in the wind. Someone suggested they might help... so I thought I'd give them a go - has anyone tried them?

All the trotters who race here have them in when racing or in training...

I think personally they are a bad idea!

If your horse is not happy in windy conditions...ask yourself why...

This is meant in no bad way - only you know your horse - but if it was mine i would want to correct that problem by showing him im the leader, he can trust me and therefore when i say we're riding in the wind...he would do it with no objections or silliness as it must be safe :)

My reaction would be to throw the plugs and lunge him in the rain, wind, snow, storms - i have control and he has to do it...until its no longer an issue

My horsey was ridden/driven in a sulky even after his racing career, with ear plugs because he was dangerous and it kept him calm...yeh so that would be why without them now he no longer spins and runs, rears, spooks :p

If you do use them - keep us updated...my horse is not your horse ;) :)

He has been lunged in the wind rain snow etc whatever for the last 4 months - day in, day out, and I can put him anywhere now - I have totally rebacked him this summer - he will stand with no trouble he doesn't spook anymore but he's so tense and won't relax. I was thinking I could use it aws an aid to help reduce his anxiety... it's sad he gets like this but I'm trying to get him over it any way I can - anything that helps with the killer plastic and pigeons would be great.

Only an ignorant person would consider ear plugs a bad idea!

For what it's worth pomms scored low in my ear plug testing (versus gun fire)

Ear plus employ a pressure point which helps the horse relax, and also really help them focus on the rider

Far superior to pumping your horse with calmers!!

IMO it would make him worse....

The way i got mine over plastic was to tie them to his fence and let him figure it out - harsh but worked enough to allow me to then have one floating round the floor when he was tied up which progressed to him now standing next to me using them - flapping and making noise while he stands next to me likes he cant see it or is deaf :p

I would say your never completley going to get rid of his instinct - potential predator coming to get me - but King just gets startled never side steps or anything...if he does he jumps off the floor on all fours like a thelwell pony :D lol

You hack on your own with or with others in the wind?

If you have just re-backed him - how old is he?

If he's young i would say he is doing fantastic - hes not 100% relaxed or happy but is doing it and facing his fear - each time growing with you :)

Either way hun - its your horse - you dont have to listen to what others say - if its what you think will help - try it :)

I have never needed to use ear plugs in ridden work, but have successfully used them for clipping a mare who without them was very dangerous, and just reacting badly to the sound.

Fingers crossed they do the trick for your cob !

I never said it was a bad idea for her or her horse - said IMO with our horses on our island and how they are used they are a bad idea - please dont mis-take my post as i know everything - i dont...i am simply replying with my experience and knowledge - you have different - great helps BnB make her own mind up :)

And i agree - pumping your horse with calmers is silly nonsense...as is TCP - i know people who use that to ride!!:mad:
