Hello,
Can't stop worrying about what could have happened. A warning to anybody else with a pond.
We have a pond at the stables (approx 20m x 15m in size, very shallow edges, deepest point about 1 metre), As you would expect at the moment, frozen. Pond not in the field, but near the stables.
My pony has been with us almost 4 years and is fully aware that the pond is there. Won't go into details, but pony decided to untie herself and go straight to the pond. Taking no notice of me calling, started to walk onto the pond. About 2 metres in the ice collapsed under her weight and she managed to scramble out. Running back to other horse in a panic.
It happened so quickly, but could have been tragic if she had been further out when the ice gave way. It's ironic that the vet had only left 10 minutes previously after routine vaccinations. Had visions of me calling her back!
Goes to show how easily accidents happen, especially with animals and kids.
