Pongy pony

Hi, I'm looking after a stallion recovering from rain scald. The scald has gone however he's pongy and a fly magnet.
I have to apply citronella every few hours.

I haven’t used shampoo. Would it help, even temporarily? Ie after a few days is he going to exude pong again?

I wouldn't put citronella on a pony that has had rain scald it can burn his skin, you need a gentle shampoo like maleseb or dermoline medicated but I would only do it once keep wetting the area won't help.

But if he continues to smell I would get a vet.

Thanks, I don't apply citronella to areas affected by the scald. I'm careful to avoid those. I apply it only over thick fur where I notice the flys gather.

It sounds like he's still a bit manky underneath the scabs. If that's the case, I'd plaster him in zinc & castor oil cream over them and when it's been absorbed, gently rub any scabs off but don't pick at them then just repeat as necessary. There should be clean dry skin under those scabs. At the same time, look at his diet as all skin problems other than injuries, stem from the digestive system. Micro linseed and brewers yeast are good to add and the old fashioned but still very effective Kossolian is excellent too.

If Maesfen's suggestion and a bath in insecticidal dermoline (but do make sure he dries properly - old fashioned wicking rug would be my suggestion....) does not show improvement in 48hr or so I would be wanting a vet

Many stallions ,and geldings, if their 'equipment ' isn't regularly and properly cleaned , will have a strong smell. It's unfortunate how many people don't keep up with this important hygiene job, I often smell the tell tale odour of dirty , possibly infected, neglected male horses ...once smelled, never forgotten!
