Does anyone keep a pony as a pet???

Blue is a sort of pet. I now ride twice a week (I didn’t ride him for years due to paranoia I was too big!!) and while I LOVE riding I get just as much happiness taking him for our walks, grooming, taking for grass and even mucking out!

We are both happy with this balance now days, he does enjoy being ridden and having a purpose.

but does anyone keep purely as pets>?

Mine at 15 is purely a pet due to eyes and i dont begrudge a penny i pay out or the work looking after her. she is my friend and happily goes out with her mates in field every day and that wont change till "The decision" is made. :)

I have two youngsters just for the pleasure of having them around, I don't want to ride anymore but missed seeing ponies in the field. They will go back to Blue Cross at 4 probably to begin their training I will miss them, but can always foster some more.

I just have a "pet" welsh section a :) she's a spoilt rotten little brat, never wants for anything and gets pampered  is she greatful? Of course not!

Wb is a pet due o KS and not going through the op with her as se wouldn't cope with it.

Don't care she is happy and so much more confidant that when I first got her.

I know someone who has several and would keep them all as pets just doing all hard jobs with no riding. I have three and they are pets and ridden where possible / fit etc

I have one big pet at 16.3hh only 6 yearsold but last year fell up horsebox ramp and injured his neck so bad that he can never be ridden again, so I went and got him a little friend 12.1hh pony and he will be a pet aswell and they love each other, so im happy as long as the the big guy is happy .

My mare is a pet now! I have had her 10 years and always ridden 4-6 times a week. However she has had surgery on a tendon so have decided to retire her so she can enjoy a happy life in the field:) Luckily I get to ride my daughter's 14.2 so I still get my riding fix!

I have 4 Shires (2 mares and their rising 4 year old sons). I've had 3 other Shires and a Clydie that are deceased. All of them are/were pets, never ridden or driven, never intended to be so. I also have 3 donkeys (2 Baudet du Poitou jennies and 1 standard jenny). They, too, are pets.

I have one :D A little ginge Sec A with flaxen mane and tail.

He is of no use to me at all but he's a great cuddle monster and I love him, a real character with a total mind of his own.

He's a lawnmower and leads the life of riley.

I suppose I do yes!
My TB is no longer ridden, then he has his own pet tiny pony to keep him company when I ride my other horse once in a blue moon and my daughters pony has been off for ages so in theory we have 4 pet ponies :(
I would be happy with this arrangement and keep them all for ever more I just need a much bigger field!

My old pony was gave to a friend of mine as a pet to keep her shetland company! He just chills out in the field everyday!

I got two pet goats instead haha

I suppose my pony is a pet really. I had him on loan to start with and he was lame on and off so couldn't always be ridden. When he came right (ish) I had kind of got out of the habit of riding and then when his owner gifted him to me I was 11 weeks pregnant and had agreed with my husband that I would not ride until after the baby was born. I've been walking him and gently lunging him to keep him ticking over and intend to have a sit back on him a few weeks after the baby is born and see how we get on. We never did much anyway, just pottered round the local roads and forest. He will stay with me forever now ridden or as a field ornament.

I bought my girl as a 4yr old when I was 14. She got diagnosed with collateral ligament damage in 2009 and I had 2 years work out of her after that but she went downhill again and is now retired at 10 :( She won't go anywhere else now and I am happy for her to be a lawnmower with my yearling until I have finished uni :) As long as she is happy and comfortable I am too :)

Mine also has ligament damage and is not ridden. It's lovely to read of other pet ponies! My friend's horse is retired and also a pet, so the two of them pootle around together and spend ages grooming each other. We know they have had a good grooming session when they are both covered in patches of grassy slobber! My boy does go out for walks in hand, which he enjoys, but he seems content, at 12 years old, not to be ridden - he always was so laid back he was virtually horizontal.

I have two mini shets, both really are only patting ponies apart from one doing some online agility; her daughter is a tad brain damaged so is a slightly bonkers field ornament. I suppose as far as I'm concerned my big horse is a pet too as I don't rider her I just do the hugging, grooming and carrot suffing, the YO does ride her regularly though.

yep, four of various sizes and ages, my near total enjoyment is looking after them and just watching them enjoying life. I ride one occasionaly when the mood takes me, i have time and the weather is nice. He's always lovely and sane. A quote i like is " owning horses is a pleasure and riding is a bonous".

Charlie is technically a pet, he cant be ridden anymore due to an injury so is a very happy lawnmower and companion to my yearling. He loved beingridden and competing but he's just as happy as a "pet" now :)

My mum has a little Welsh Section A mare (who my dentist thinks could be late thirties/early forties!) who is kept as a pet. She is a rescue pony and now lives the life of luxury. :)

Chloe is pretty much a pet. I've done enough with her that someone could do more if anything happened to me, but she goes for walkies, mostly!

Charlie I think is more a pet really as my daughter does ride him and will be riding him more but she loves leading him, cuddling, grooming just spending time with him probably more that the riding :)

Yeah! My little lady is a pet :) she's retired due to illness, she's got such a love for life it's lovely to watch her enjoy herself!
