What makes you think he has jayne101? Is this a new thing or has it been there pretty much all his life? If it's new, has he injured the eye recently? Or had an infection in it? Is it a wall eye? If it's new and it's causing concern, I'd get the vet to have a look and refer you to a specialist eye clinic if necessary. If you don't feel it's that bad but the eye is causing some sort of low level problem when the pony is being ridden then you could get a blinker to fit on his bridle. I'm thinking that if he doesn't have much control over where the eye is looking then he may be constantly startled by what he sees, so he may appear permanently spooky and anxious. So a blinker would limit what he sees to safe things, at least while riding him.
hi thanks for your response he is only 15 months old and i have had him for two weeks he is jumpy on one side if you approach him from the side but if you approach him from the front he is better and will follow you with his head im not overly worried about it but i wondered if there were any exercises i could do to improve it i know he is not blind in that eye because if i flick my hand infront of the eye he blinks so it makes me wonder if his old owner did not do much with him on that side so he is not bothering to use it. let me know what you think.
Hmmm. When you look into the jumpy eye side, does the eyeball seem to be shifting around fast? If not, and you already know he can see through it, I'd definitely think it's a learned behaviour thing. I'd do lots of GOOD things from that side, ie always feed him polos or a carrot or fuss him or groom him. I guess the only other thing it might be if he feels more nervous about being approached from that side is that he has had some sort of injury that worries him. But I think that's a long shot. I'd try the behaviour stuff first. Good luck - he's a lucky baby to have such a thoughtful and observant mum! x
