My mare (32" ) has lived with the yard Shetland for years, she's 24 and he is 27. She is a tart when in season but he didn't notice. Now for nearly a week they have been rampant though not achieving anything until this morning, full on service with err, thrusts and tail flagging! He was gelded at 9 but did have some interest in buckets and haynets for a while then nothing for years, now they won't stop! She has also been mounting her daughter! My thinking is separate them as I'm concerned she or he may get damaged and also wondering if she has something going on with her ovaries. Has anyone had a similar problem and how did you deal with it?

well I doubt he's a rig but maybe get the vet in for some advice? Also could get her some supplements to stop he being so full on.

Yes I would separate for now but only if their wont try jumping fences and hurting themselves!

Haha sounds like they're having a good time.
On a serious note, have they both been tested for cushings? Cushings can play havoc with hormones. Or it could be an ovary problem with the little mare?
Someone I know, her mare was suddenly behaving like a stallion and that turned out to be an ovary problem.

Agree it might be Cushing's (PPID)

She has cushings and is on prascend. Since the gelding achieved his goal he has become more rampant and is hurting her back as he is grabbing with his teeth. They are now separated and I will discuss her with the vet, she's still in full on season.
