I am a 5ft7 woman and was wondering if i was better off with a horse or a pony, as i am quite a nervous rider i have heard that ponies would be better, but am i too tall for one?

No. If you feel like you would be better with a pony, there will be one out there to suit you. Right pony that will carry you and will take a saddle to fit you, sorted. Taller people than you (don't know what you weigh) ride ponies.

I actually generally find horses less hassle than ponies though :D

I am 5' 8" best part of 15 stone. I umpire polo and always chose the smaller of the 2 ponies on offer ( very dodgy knees!) as of yet I have not squashed one!!!!! We do go at a fair rate and for 1 hour plus on them!!!!

if its because your nervous rather than you have trouble mounting - you'll get less 'back chat' from a horse . ponies are in my experience much cheekier, throw more curve balls at you than any horse.

You need to look for the animal that is 'right' for you and not limit yourself to looking at horses or ponies.
Good or bad, sane or insane can come in many different shapes or sizes.

I'm sure you could ride a pony but if you get to tall then maybe find a nice cob type horse who is quite slow and steady? I find slow and steady is better for slightly nervous riders. Also keep in mind that any horse over 14.2 hands is considered a horse so you might be able to get a 15hand or so one? People sometimes think horses are always really tall, but actually you can get ones that aren't much bigger than what's classed as a pony. :)
