ponies starve to death

Bodmin Moor is not so remote so I find it shocking that none of the horses were reported to be in such poor condition. On somewhere like Dartmoor or Exmoor the size they are with so many deep coombes etc a small band of ponies could be out of sight and not seen for a long time but on Bodmin? I wonder as some of the reports suggest they are not the regular ponies there but ones just tipped out there for the winter. Hope they get to the bottom of it but I doubt anyone will be prosecuted.
 
It;s been a truly bleak winter this year.

Not even cared for animals have survived e.g. the sheep and cattle.

Yes they were dumped apparently. Some died in foal and one managed to survive in foal. They PTS as well. Yes as they were not moor ponies they were not designed for that environment. As usual utter failure of the passport system...perhaps we should ask for a refund for a failed system. Hence no traceability of any owner. Perhaps there should be a funded charity that will PTS free of charge for those that genuinely cannot afford it to stop this kind of suffering ie like PDSA branches for small animals, BUT I bet those lazy bones wouldnt even be bothered to use it. Another sad day for equines. Horse lovers no.
 
Sadly a lot of these ponies are not dumped but owned by local famers who have rights on the moor (the sheep and cattle are in the same way) this happens ever year. You and I have to have passports by law for our horses but they don't need passports untill they come of the moor, what a mess the passport system is. Get rid of it!
 
The people commenting on that article are so naive. "Take the horses to the RSPCA if you can't afford them!!!" Yes because charities are queueing up for more horses aren't they..
Also 'the 8 horses could have been saved with food!!!! They shouldn't have been shot'.

How come these readers obviously know so little but have so much to say *sigh*
 
Charities can't afford all these abandoned horses. They need killing quickly and humainly, not being left to starve. Same for the animals owned by those with common rights and grazing rights, if the animals are suffering they should be killed quickly. If someone later tries to claim or complain prosecute the ****.
 
The lack of slaughter houses will be making this situation worse (and yes, starving is worse than a quick death by the knackerman!). Breeders who would send the ponies for slaughter can't (or won't) afford to have them put down by a vet and disposed of, so dump them, dead or alive. Once again, victims of indiscriminate breeding.

Goodness knows how it will all end. Terribly sad.
 
Like sheep, and pigs all animals should be tagged in some form at birth. If you can not affford the tag you can not afford to breed.
When the passport system was introdroduced there were certain exception made for hill ponies and foals younger than six months but I think that should end. If DEFRA were as interested in equines as any thing else the chances of this happening would be slimmer.
If its not tagged its PTS and the owners fined if they can be found.

Not an altogether bad idea... microchips aren't exactly working are they??
 
There are simply no words! People MUST be responsible and pts rather then dump. No animal should suffer like that, the person or people who left those animals to die should be hung!!!
