Ponies up to 15.1hh ish jumping?

14.1 generally schools over 3ft-3'3 but will jump over bigger things every once in a while

Thankyou, she is a complete star, & I am proud to be biased! The pingy back end is fab in a jump off though for shortcuts & corners. And great out hunting when the take off is a quagmire. She wasn't always easy though, she likes to be in control & until she had the experience to do so we had lots of hairy moments! (and unless you are a small child or nervous teen, refuses to jump 3' & under in anything resembling a sensible manner, unless its very complex)

There's a user on here (can't remember her name) but she has a 14.2 eventing at intermediate I think.

This is Andy he jumps whatever you point him at. Has schooled xc to 1.05ish and sj to 1.30. He was competing at 1.05 and was about to step up to newcomers. This was all horse striding and he never had an issue.

This is my old pony Westie clearing 1.40. He was only 14hh at a push!

148cm BSJA ponies jump massive, isn't it like 1.40m? I'm still shocked at hearing kids as young as 8 jump 1.05m's on 128's!

From my own experience, I used to jump my 13.2hh native over 1.20m at home. I've seen the odd little horse out jumping 1.20m's locally. I think they're more than capable but the reason you see more big horses IMO is simply because there's more of them in the first place. 15hh/15.1hh is sort of an inbetween size, most people go from ponies to 15.2hh+ (like me, Ive never had one between 14.3hh and 16hh).

Pie is 15.2 and comfortably jumps 3ft 3 at home, 3ft6 is a bit much for him. We competed over the summer at a local level in 2ft9 - 3ft. He has a massive stride for a relatively small horse, bigger than some horses that are taller than him so providing I get a good canter the striding isn't a problem. Our biggest problem is that he isn't very brave with spooky fences!

Anyone remember Marion Mould and Stroller? And Bay Lane, a very tall showjumper riding a 15hh little horse? Both had a lot of success in the 1950's. (creaks off to rocking chair :) )

Stroller not only one the Hickstead Derby, he also won a silver medal in the Mexico Olympics (1968) the Queen Elizabeth Cup and Leading Showjumper of the Year at HOYS, among many others. He also jumped (and cleared!) 6'10" in a Puissance class, and tied first place with a big warmblood ridden by one of the Shockemohle brothers.
I had a 15hh TBx mare years ago who jumped 5'4" and Blaze, my chunky cob, reliably jumps round a 1.10m track and also cross country. She is just 15hh.

Have you seen the height of the JA show jumping fences, they are huge.

There always be freaks of nature, like Stroller and Our Nobby who can compete on the international scene, but there are plenty of small horses competiting successfully. I know some even now.

My best ever horse was a 15 hh TB and I Novice evented him, but that was probably his limit. In those days it was max 3'6"for cross country and up to 3'9" for show jumping. I admit that my eyes were on stalks when I saw the height of the show jumps, but he didn't worry.

I haven't seen the name Bay Lane for ages and ages!

Willy is 14.3 on a tall day  (i.e. yesterday wen he saw the others off hunting and was rather excited ) and has taken me round ** tracks.

For size contrast, the horse on the riht is 15hh, Willy is on the left and pretty small in comparison

As much as I love pony club, they tried to tell me that prelim was too much for him, and I should stick to lower fences, erm, no thanks!

Not sure how tall Claret was but definitely under 15.1
There are often a few 14.2+'s competing at 1* (remember at least 2 at Blair 2011). A friend of mine has competed her pony up to this level. What height is PC Open champs, or Juniors??

Lolo's sister had a pretty amazing jumping pony, and there is a member with a 14.2 palomino at intermediate level. (Sorry DG X posted )

I wouldn't say it was common to have ponies/horses at that height competing at the higher levels but it definitely happens :D

Clobells, I was literally about to post :D

My sister had a 14hh (on his tippy toes!) cob, who pinged 1.10m ODEs. The time was an issue- to make it, Al simply never took a pull. He was amazing, truly truly beyond scopey. Especially considering his knee high feathers, enormous width and the fact he was essentially a Shire horse on tiny legs.

She moved onto a 14.2hh mare, who she also did PC opens (1.10m) with and jumped round the Houghton Grand Prix course on, which was up to 1.20m, with a bounce at 1.10m in- Ellie pulled up lame at the end of the XC section, but was the only competitor clear up til that point.

I generally think ponies are scopier than people give them credit for. Henry (the cob) was nothing special to look at, his conformation wasn't ideal and neither was his general attitude. But he had a gutsy jockey (she was 11/12 jumping the courses I mentioned!) who just didn't stop asking him.

Henry, and his 12yo jockey. This fence is a decent BE Novice fence, off a turn. As you can see, he was super pingy!

Ellie. This fence isn't that big for her. So she actually took off over a stride away from it...

As shown here...

Equally, a 12.2hh show pony, pinging an 80cm XC fence...

Wow what a fantastic load of stories and lots of pictures - thank you :) just watched the puissance vid too, how amazing! I was scared watching it! Those Xc fences are a decent width too. Great to hear your stories

Some fab little ponies here, really wow! The jumps compared to them look pretty big too, but it just goes to show what they can do really!

My 14.3hh connie x has a serious pop in him. His forte is hunting and XC he's bold and I 100% trust him, he's never stopped with me. We jump 5ft + hedges out hunting without any issues, but isn't careful enough round a course of Show Jumps.

This was playing over 1m 40 at home.

He makes hegde hopping look easy and is what he enjoys most :)

I've a 15.1hh as well, he's not done much jumping yet but does have a tidy pop and has more of conscience regarding poles that my other horse. But here he is popping through a grid at home.

My just 15hh has thought nothing of 1m20 (his pilot does :o ) we generally stick to 80cms at home though :)

Some 148 ponies with life height certificates are almost 15.1 with shoes on!!! In that case, 1.40? 1.50+
Have you ever seen videos of Sophi Ball's old pony Nero on youtube? showname the dark emperor.
He is 14.1 and jumps open horse classes.
How long is a piece of string really :)

Yes I remember as a kid on our 14.2s being towered over by a boy on a 14.2 that had to have been 15.2! he thought ours were small

I had a 14.2/14.3hh pony/horse (I competed her as a horse due to my age, but she's now competing as a 14.2hh I believe) who could jump massive. I'm a bit of a wuss, so biggest I ever jumped her was 3'6, but saw her jump 4'+ and loose-schooled her over the same, she's now doing well at BE90/100, including double clears.

Meanwhile, my 15.2hh gelding can jump, loves jumping, but has far less skill. He's just a bit... floppy? :P He dangles his legs & doesn't try the same, although he's improving and I lunged him over about 3'9/4' not too long ago, I was quite impressed as it's not often he makes a real effort! I think in time he'll be able to pop a 3'/3'3 course and a few bigger fences with relative ease, but he will never do BSJA or event, he's not scopey enough, nothing like the mare.

Tally's 14.3hh and some kind of Welsh/TB/Arab mix and happily pings around up to around 1.40m if I feel like it (I usually don't!).

Novice XC fence (so 1.10m or so, no idea how wide)

1.30m or so, as you can tell by his face, that's getting to the top of our jumping height.

IMG_3296.jpg

1.20m or so

IMG_0918.jpg

My dear old pony who is about 13.3hh and was, at a rough estimate, 25 with the conformation of a brontosaurus. No idea how big this is, but she once cleared 1.40m.

Generally speaking, how high does your 14.3hh-15.1hh pony/horse jump in xc and sj? (Also would like to hear of ponies and horses slightly smaller/bigger than this doesn't have to be this exact height!) You often see the bigger horses competing to a good standard but can this height of horse/pony do that too - mainly xc but sj too? How far have you or someone you know got in sj/xc and how high have you known one to jump? Is it a downfall to compete a hors/pony this size?

Any pictures appreciated :)

Thank you!!
Well, At Antwerp in 1967 Marion Mould and "Stroller" cleared the wall in the puissance class at 6'8" and only put a brick out at 6ft 10in, to win jointly with Alwin Schockemöhle on Athlet. "Stroller" was only 14.2hh!

Not good at maths but I think 6'8" is a bit over 2 metres. I believe it's still a record for a pony.

Sophii Ball took the Dark Emporer aka Nero over some massive fences

This pic is her jumping 1.45 on him and he is 14.1hh

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...95990472.57349.240321302657168&type=1&theater

She has now sold him on to someone who is also jumping him :D

You can find pictures of him all over and videos on you tube absolutely rocketing over fences... unbelievable for the size of him :D

Sophii is about 6ft tall (but light) and She is a teenager

Just remembered - "Dundrum" cleared 7'2" over the Puissance wall at HOYS in the early 1960s. Ridden, I think, by Tommy Wade, an Irish show jumper. Dundrum was a 15hh Connemara - not strictly speaking a pony due to his height although we always used to refer to Connies as "ponies". I saw it on television and it was SO exciting! There was much more coverage of show jumping at sensible times of the day way back then.

Stroller won a silver medal at the Mexico (?) Olympics.
Our Nobby, ridden by Jane Bullen, was measured in at 15 hands so he could compete in open eventing was also at the Olympics and in the medals.
Dundrum, 15 hand Connemara, won many top events for Ireland ridden by Tommy Wade, including a Puissance at, I think, over 7'
Teddy O'Connor was 15 hands He won a lot eventing for the USA.

There are many instances of small horses competing at top level.
