They were written by Patricia Leitch and were about Jinny and Shanith, titles inc A devil to ride and for love of a horse.

Hi, yes i remember the books and still have one! The girl was called Jinny and it was a chestnut arab mare. The books are by Patricia Leitch and there were about 12 books in all i think. They were published around 1985. Found mine when sorting through childhood things stored in my parents loft!

Got all these!. They were originally published early 1970's but reprinted fairly regularly. Easy to find on Ebay. The reading order and date of publication is

1 For Love of a Horse (Armada Original, 1976)
2 A Devil to Ride (Armada Original, 1976)
3 The Summer Riders (Armada Original, 1977)
4 Night of the Red Horse (Armada Original 1978)
5 Gallop to the Hills (Armada 1979)
6 Horse in a Million (Armada 1980)
7 The Magic Pony (Armada 1982)
8 Ride Like The Wind (1983)
9 Chestnut Gold (1984)
10 Jump for the Moon (1985)
11 Horse of Fire (1986)
12 Running Wild (1988)

I had the Phantom Horse books.

A girl called Jean and her brother and they caught this palomino american horse and took it back to Oxford then the brother's horse which was an irish grey called killarney got sold wheren he was lame and the girl whose dad bought him wore nail varnish so she was a bitch and he was accidentally sold for meat, Anyway they managed to get him back but not until Phantom horse nearly got made into sausagess too. Phew. Wish I could rememebre what I need at the shops!

I still have my whole collection of Jinny and Shantih books even though they gave me nightmares as a child. I also have a small collection of pullein-thompson books that I'd like to increase but they don't seem to be in charity shops. Anyone have any they'd like to rehome?

Oh I loved them all, but mostly all the Jill books, still have them somewhere. It made me think though, I remember a book called "The Prize Pony" - you can imagine what it was about (!!) who wrote that?? Also remember the Jackie books, but they were rubbish compared to Jill Books. Loved them!!

Oh and there was a trio of books on eventing, I remember "Hoof in the Door", can't remember the author though or the names of the other two books.

Legendary!!

Memories! Started off with the jill books and finished with the Pullein Thompson books before getting my first pony. Magical!

I loved the Jinny books!
I do remember the Night of the red horse one being quite creepy?! Wasn't there a painting that seemed to come alive or something.
And one of the later ones with the trek ponies being used in the film too was also a bit creepy.
I am going to try to get them I think
