pony books "Jill" ones (i think)

loved the jill books!

theres also another book, cant remember any names but its an english girl growing up in the states and she has a palomino pony who is no end of trouble and ends up being a superstar jumping pony???

That'll be "Phantom Horse"! Can't remember the girl's name but her brother was called Angus and it was the start of a small series.

I read them all.

I remember all those books, I had the ones with the pony Quest in them as well but can't remember much about them! Another good one was called 'showjumping secret' about a boy that had Polio and bought a mare to jump called Secret. I liked the Jinny ones the best I have to say.

this brings some memories back!
Favourite Jill book was "Jill's Riding Club"
Loved and still have the Jinny @ Finmory series, in fact, I enjoyed all Patricia Leitch (author's) books, my favourite being Dream of Fair Horses
Enjoyed Fly by Night
Read many of the "older" series e.g Primrose Cummings stories, and Mary Gerviase (Pony from the Farm, Pony of our Own etc) featuring Georgie and her pony Spot
Also enjoyed Judith Berrisford's (she wrote the Jackie and Misty books)
And anything by the Pullein-Thompsons (I enjoyed their Black Beauty's Clan series, especially Black Ebony)

I used to love Phantom horse in danger.
Loved the Jinny series and the Jill books - Jill and the perfect pony was my favourite. Loved Jockey School too.
I once read a great book about a girl who had a bad accident on a horse and lost her nerve. A local riding school let her look after a horse called midnight who didn't trust people and she gradually got her nerve back by looking after him on the ground. Not sure what the book was called. Another one which I can't remember was about a school girl getting a race horse youngster from an auction and keeping it a secret from her parents. Vague details I know but if anyone knows the names I'd be grateful.

gosh thats scary, i was round my mums the other day and she brought down a load of horsey books from my old room to go through,i gave all the jill ones away to the girl down the road thats keen on horses as i knew they'd be read and appreciated.I think i kept 2 of them as they were my fave, jills riding school was one of them i think! so sad i know but it reminds me of my child hood.what about the Jinny books then?????!!!! now i will never let them go,i read everyone of them 50 times over i'm sure, always wanted my own chesnut arab mare and i did have one on loan for a while but she was part owned by a riding school so she got a bit grumpy!

awww i loved jinny and the saddle club i collected all the saddle club books and only recently gave them to a woman at my mums work for her wee girl i sooo wanted to be carole and have her horse starlight!

I remember Dream of Fair Horses - that was lovely and also a bit sad!!
Then there was another series called Pony in the family, the Showjumper in the family etc. Can't remember who they were written by but were very good too!

When I was a small child I read all the Jill books, but I hd very old copies. So when I went to school I was doing money in £ S D as i had read so much of it in my pony books.

I also had Showjumping Secret - he qualified for the Foxhunter final I think.

Oh wow!
I read the lot, hey're still in boxes at mother & father's. Saddle club was my favourite although i did read Jinny and the pullien-thompson ones, i used to save all my money and buy 3 or 4 in one go.
I might just dig them out next time i'm back, i could do with being taken back into my 'no worry' child years.

I have to say I'm feeling quite nostalgic.

Oh wow!
I loved The Saddle Club books. I would, without fail, be in tears after reading 'Trail Riders', when Cobalt has to be shot

Also, re the above, Phantom Horse. . . I swear two books are being muddled into one.

Wasn't the English girl growing up in the States (with her mother), and they owned and ran a rehab centre for horses? There was one book (again I would be crying!!) where the young girl and her mum went off to collect a crazy stallion, who had been locked away in a barn. It was raining heavily, but they loaded and started to drive the stallion home. But lightening struck a tree which fell down, causing them to crash. Mother died, daughter in a coma. What were those books called? I loved them!!!

A couple of months ago I picked up a whole set of original Ruby Fergusons, plus a load of the Pullen-Thompson books, in a charity shop for £2 for the lot. I've been in heaven reading them and re-living my childhood......much to my husband's amusement.....I'm 52.

I always did wonder if Jill's Mummy was going to end up married to Martin-in-the-wheelchair.

Oh, I've also got some of the Three Jays books written by Pat Smythe, and her autobiography, which is fascinating.

The book of National Velvet is really worth reading if you are into nostalgia. It's nothing like the film, it's more detailed and wittier.

I too managed to get some of the Jill books second hand recently. Also some Pullein Thompsons. They do seem very dated now but used to love them. I'd forgotten the Jays books by Pat Smythe, must try and track them down too. Others I loved were the My Friend Flicka series and the Silver Brumby series.

Does anyone remember the one about a girl who had a pony on loan called Quest and she had a friend who had a pony called Duskie I think only two books were wrote.

[/ QUOTE ]

I read both of them, the first was called 'A Pony Quest' I think. Basically about a group of pony mad kids that hung out at a local riding school. Quest was quite naughty and used to buck the girl off a bit... there was a girl who let the ponies out because she was jealous of the others all being friends I remember. Loved them and was disapointed I could only ever find the first two in the series.

But how can we have a whole thread on classic pony books without referring to the amazing Bobby and Shelta at Bracken house books. I've read those books thousands of times, usually in February when I need to remember why I love working with horses... and I'm still looking for my own Guy Mathews....

I am Jane Badger of the pony books website - thanks for the earlier link. I'll try and answer all the unanswered things:

Purpledobbin: Wish for a Pony is by Monica Edwards, and I think the other title you're after is Cargo of Horses. All of Monica Edwards' books are due to be (or are being) republished by Girls Gone By.

A Pony in the Family (the others are Show Jumper and Colt) is by Judith M Berrisford.

Mystery on the Moor is by Josephine Pullein-Thompson, and is part of a series.

I think the Pony Quest book is by Elizabeth Wynne.

I'm afraid I don't know the Midnight book - there are a couple of books called Afraid to Ride but I don't think it's either of those.

Fidra Books are republishing some K M Peyton and Josephine Pullein-Thompson, and have just acquired the rights to Ruby Ferguson, so Jill will be republished next year.

I interviewed Gillian Baxter earlier this week so will have an article on her up in the next week or so, and am due to see Josephine Pullein-Thompson next week (both still going strong!) There are interviews with Hazel M Peel and Caroline Akrill already up there. This link will take you to the Pony Books Page which has links for most of the major pony book authors.

Thanks for the information and the link Jane, will be following it up asap! This thread has brought back so many memories, it's brilliant! If I get hold of some of the books I will certainly be reading them again and I'm 60!
