Pony books - which ones did you read?

Oh forgot to add , the ladybird book for little Kids with the bay pony that runs away to join the carousel horses.

there was another book I think where it happened the otehr way with the carousel horses coming to life and I think one died in harness and another became a white horse on the waves ( I could be making this up!)

Black Beauty
The Silver Brumby
The Horse Whisperer
Pony on the Porch (all the animal ark books :D)
Patch
Heartland
Saddle Club

Ive read pony for Jill books by ruby ferguson, fly by night,my friend flicker, international velvet and jinny jump over the moon :)

Nobody on here has mentioned a very special limited edition book called Brownie - by Jayne Munro-Gaymer. I have a signed copy as she was a family friend. And another obscure book called Crab the Roan which I found in the high school library.

There are lots I read not listed and all those early ones mentioned above. I was obsessed with them. I always preferred the Pullein-Thompson sisters (Diana, Christine and Josephine) to Ruby Ferguson and dreamed of being at Pony Club Camp being shouted at by Majors and Captains. I was the one with the ancient native pony and no saddle...

A Horse called Setember - brilliant book also.
Ant thankyou MissFitz - Ludo and the Star Horse. That one really sticks in my mind

Oh I've thought of another one I would like to find a copy of!

It was about a girl who wanted to be an eventer and she went to work at a yard that rented out hunters. It was run by two eccentric sisters i think, All the horses were a bit dodgy but in the end she found her perfect event horse. There was a bit in it about a dead mouse accidentally being used as a teabag!?

It was a red book and had a picture of a chestnut horse cantering in XC gear on the front.

This is Eventers Dream by Caroline Arkill there are 3 books in the series also Hoof In The Door and Ticket to Ride

Dressedkez - an academic called Alison Haymonds has written a thesis and two great, readable papers on pony books, and I've also found obscure Swedish papers on crypto-lesbianism in pony books, and a great piece on Jill! Jane's website is brimming over with great interviews and publishing histories.

I'm also working on a book on the broader theme of girls and ponies, and know that there was another girls-ponies books doing the rounds of editors at the same time as mine. Popular subject, it seems :)

Many thanks to Jane Badger for the link - I have really enjoyed being reminded of the books I have read - I had forgotten many! :) ETA - I was reminded more by the cover pictures than the titles!

I found the bit about KP's books rather amusing too! :D

OOh I liked midnight dancer,
Also had some collection of horse stories where some woman got hanged by her horses reins/lunge line whilst lunging, ghost like i think? Or have i imagined it?

The saddle club & pony tails were a great favourite, i had nearly all of them! loved sheltie the shetland pony books & the riders series about alex & barney. between me & a friend we had the whole animal ark series which as well as pony in the porch included donkey on the doorstep & shetland in the shed. There were also a series of books about a girl callled sophie which werent all about ponies but as she wanted to be a farmer they featured quite often. then there were the jackie books that i liked to read & also a book called "a horse by any other name" which was about a chestnut horse called charlie. there was also a book about a girl whose family inherited a house in the country & she learnt to ride & won a competition at the end, cant remember the name of this one.

am in hospital at the moment, wish i still had these books to pass the time! damn the early teenage years when you get rid of so many things that just arnt "cool" anymore!

oh yes i read midnight dancer too & of course black beauty but an abriged dorling kindersley one, not the whole novel! it was good though as it explained horsey terms along with the story. anyone else read horse & pony magazine? used to love that with freddie & the photo story in every week. (sorry if already been mentioned, havent read the entire thread!

Is Silver Eagle about the riding school? I picked up the first in the series for £2 in a 2nd hand book shop, a real classic of its genre as they say.

The Black Hunting Whip, can't remember the author it was about a family who moved to a farm which formed the backdrop to a series of books. The Black Hunting Whip had a strange end and was almost a ghost story.
Answers please.

Yes theres the Silver Eagle riding school followed by silver eagle carries on - where the sisters who run it manage to carry it on through the war.....

Just dropping in quickly to say there is an Oberon in Sheila Chapman's books A Pony and His Partner and Mystery Pony: more info here http://www.janebadgerbooks.co.uk/ponybooksfile2/chapman1.html

and Crab the Roan was actually written by K M Peyton. Kathleen Herald was her maiden name!

There's a few authors here I haven't covered on the site, so I may well be pleading with some of you for info....

Pony Tails when I was younger - I loved them!
The saddle club
Midnight Dancer
My favourites of all though was the RIDERS books..the ones for teenagers (not the jilly cooper ones) with Alex and Barney who is wild at the start but then becomes a wonder pony. I would love to find those books again..bit of nostalgia (sp)

i love the 'riders' books, i'm 13 but found one in the library and really liked it, they're really cheap on amazon so i bought some more! They seem more 'real life' than other books where the characters are just plain amazing from the start lol. A grandma often gets me horse books, they're usually older ones like the 'jill' series which i quite like.

Not a huge fan of Lauren Brooke (heartland/chestnut hill) too dramatic esp heartland, same with Pony Club Secrets, the main character is always so fabulous yet also very beginnerish at the same time  The pony whisperer ones are ok, though :)

I've read most of the books you've all mentioned in this thread, the Silver Brumby, Jill, Follyfoot and Flicka series were my favourites.

Does anyone remember a book about either show jumping or a riding school with horses called Scorch, Fancy and White Hot (I think it was set in London) I remember really liking this book but have no clue what it is.

Brownie! You read Brownie!!!!! AND you called it a classic. I have a pic of me as a baby with Jayne, the author. It's my very favourite book of all time.
