She bought a c. 11hh pony - looks like Welsh A - in the sales last year. It has a brand below the wither, under the saddle area - just a big number "3".
Pony was in very, very poor condition but after a year of TLC is looking really good and is regaining trust in humans.

Any idea about the branding? It does look very much like it's Welsh A or got a lot of Welsh A in it and is a beautiful dapple grey.

Any thoughts?

Well when I read the title, I was going to suggest an Argentinian Polo Pony as I had one with a similar brand to the right of her tail...but don't think they play many 11hh Welsh ponies!

I'm googling it for you, but no luck yet!
There is a directory of brands in America but can't seem to find one here.

Could it be his stud ID mark?
You said he seems well bred.

Never heard of this before especially not on welsh.
Are you sure its a 3. Only asking as a small horseshoe mark indicates that it has been microchipped. Farmkey website tells you more and shows the mark.
Take a photo and maybe somebody can help you further.

Thank you, I'll take a look. I couldn't get close enough to see it properly but she described it to me as a (4 inch high or so) bold 3. I'll check out the horseshoe mark and pass this info on to her. Thank you!

MMm I'm at a loss. It's about 5 years old and was in a really bad state when bought at the sales. I don't know much anything branding, and said I'd see what I could find out on t'internet. Looks like a nicely built pony although there is something not quite right about its jawline - may have had some ill-fitting headgear in the past perhaps?

I shall check about studs branding Welshies. I don't know for sure it is a welsh A but it does look like one to my untrained eye.

Thank you.

If it is a hill pony and it's the farmers brand you won't find it on google. The farmers tend to keep knowledge of whose brand is whose local amongst themselves. One of my youngsters has a brand on the left side where the saddle would sit and it is the farmers mark.:)
