need some advice re camp. daughters pony lives out 24/7 but when goes to camp will have no turn out for whole week. He is rather a handfull at the best of times. Any advice how to keep him sane ?
transfer slowly to reduce the risk of colic. Ie... building up to the camp start bringing him in during the nigh pr day. When we bought the mare in for a week due to circumstances she came down with stress colic by day three. It could also have been food related so maybe increase the amount of hay so that it won't be a complete shock when thats all the forage he gets?
have tried him on nupafeed recently but will not eat it even in the smallest amounts in feed. Have tried him in a stable and is quite happy but just think that 24/7 may blow his mind as he loves playing in the field with his friends.
I noticed at camp last year a lot of ponies being lunged for 20 mins or so before the kids got on to ride - just took the tickle out of their feet I think!
Luckily our pony is ok - you could keep him in and not ride for a fortnight and he would just be the same steady boy!
This used to worry me when my daughter did camp on our very fizzy pony but she was fine. They do work hard which helps. However our pony club wanted them to have feeds 3 times a day as well as 3 hay nets a day. Instructor tried to tell my daughter she should be giving pony more in a feed than Alfa A. We had a bit of a battle with them but we won.
When I went to camp all the horses lived out - I think it was just as worrying chucking 20 horses out that had never seen each other before! We rode at least 3 hours a day, most of them were knackered by the end of the week!
Both my daughters ponies went to camp after being used to 24/7 turn out and were fine. If she has any problems I am sure the instructors will help her by lunging etc. As the others have said the poinies are knackered and glad of the rest when they finaly finish.
At our PC they all have to have feed (breackfast and tea) however they are fine with them only having chaff - at our PC no one is allowed to go into the stable area after feed time apart from the stable managers, keeps it all nice and chilled and peaceful.
Have a word with whoever is organising the camp and explain your concerns, I am sure they will only be to glad to help.
thanks so much for your reassuring words. I am sure he and she will cope, they are a great team. I guess i am stressing a bit as this is their first camp without me!!
