Pony contests Rolex Kentucky four-star
Pippa Roome, H&H eventing editor

27 April, 2007

The first pony to compete in the Rolex Kentucky four-star three-day event was lying seventh after the first day of dressage yesterday.

Karen O'Connor's ride Theodore O'Connor stands just 14.1hh and combines Thoroughbred and Arab blood — and an eighth Shetland pony.

"This sport pony, measuring in at 14.1hh, knows no size limitation to what he can do," says Karen in her diary on the Rolex Kentucky site. "It is really amazing to have this horse be a part of my life."

Karen and "Teddy" scored 52 to lie seventh overnight, with fellow American Missy Ransehousen holding the lead on Critical Decision, who had a mark of 47.8.

As this was posted on H&H Online, America's World Equestrian Games (WEG) bronze medallist Amy Tryon had just taken the lead on Le Samurai, after scoring 47. The first British competitors, 2003 Kentucky runners-up Polly Stockton and Tangleman, lay second on 47.2, with Australia's WEG double medallists Clayton Fredericks and Ben Along Time third on 47.4.

She goes from one extreme to another.
Wasnt her other horse that began with B around 18hh?

Oh yes, Biko!!! He was so huge! He was a brilliant xc horse.

absolutely brilliant - and another only 15.1

hope he goes well XC and gets a place

wonder if he'll get as far as the Olympics - that would be great - not since Stroller.........

No, Not 15.1 but 14.1!!!!!!!

Had just posted about this in comp riders, without realising this post was here!
bless him, do wonder how he'll cope with the distances/time, but hes obviously proven himself already..have to say, rather her than me though - those fences will look mighty big from a 14.1!!!!

One word from me: gobsmacked! I havent even heard of her competing this pony before. He must be very quick to be making the times against the big guys! Would he be allowed to compete over here, say badminton? I thought 14.2s and under were restricted to 'novice' level over here? Or have I got that totally wrong?

same here.. i've read this post a few times, and still can't quite believe it.. if she were aloud to compete him at Badminton (which should he go well at Lexington i don't see why not) i would LOVE it if she brought him over here for next years Badminton.. i'd pay good money to go and watch if she did!!!

he must be a freak of nature!!

Just proves that you dont need a big horse to jump big jumps!
Ive seen a 12.2hh pony jump out of a field over a 4ft6 fence with only a short run up!
Stroller was only 14.3!

I realy dont see why people are obsessed with large horses topping 17hh when a 15hh or even a special 14hh horse can do just as good a job, be more fun doing it (its the pony nature) and take less upkeep (in most cases)!

Mum had a pony years ago (70's) she bought from some gypsies, she was 12.3hh and would pop 5ft for fun! They are freaks of nature!

I think you'll find that he was only 14.2hh as before winning all in the horse world, she did the pony teams with him, and he would have had to be 14.2hh or under for that..

Wasn't it Ice Dancer that went round Badminton a few years ago....plucky little grey pony(think it was with Ruth Edge but I may have that wrong).?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, Ruth was his rider. She was only 18 when they went around Badminton
