The Pony i share has a nasty cough, she has had it for just over a week and is coughing up phlegm, she stops when ridden to pull her head down to attempt to cough. On one occasion she had a yellow discharge from her nose. Yesterday I lunged her and she appeared to also have heave lines. This is slightly worrying me.

Other than this she seems well in herself. A few other horses on the yard have had/ have a cough but not sure of details.

I suspect it is a virus but wondered whether anyone else had experienced anything similar or knew what it may be?

We are going to get vet out if it persists over the weekend.

Thanks :)

Perhaps you can talk to the owner about the symptoms .... though as sharer I can appreciate you are out of control. A cough with clear phlegm, not so bad, yellow glue like gloopy stuff needs a vet. Just had vet out for one of mine with same, was a chest infection. A broad spectrum antibiotic and a muscle relaxant was prescribed and in just three days he's almost back to normal :)

As has already been said clear / no discharge wouldn't worry me (mine had a cough a few weeks ago with a little clear discharge, just gave him benylin for a few days and kept an eye on him and seems to have cleared up now, wouldn't know ridden as is now lame and on bute!) but for green / yellow discharge would get vet to take a look
