I've just received my copy of Showing World Mag and see there is an article about a pony being doped (by a competitor presumably) at Northern Horse Show a few weeks ago. Whoever did it apparently used a drug that is used to euthanase cats and dogs - is there no limit to how low people would stoop to win? Just a question though, this stuff is called 'pentobarbital' - is this stuff something that you can get on the open market or is this cretin who has done this someone with veterinary 'contacts?'

Immediately below that is a news item about poines being stabbed in West Wales - this whole thing is just completely sick and I hope they string up the people found to be doing things like this to animals. Its a complete disgrace.

Pentobarbital is a shedule 3 drug,

dosent take much to kill a puddy tat or puppy dog

we use it to euthanse small animals but you need a whacking big dose to kill a horse. think some large animal vets use it a a sedation (obviously the percentages are different)

but in theory it can only be bought through a veterinary wholesaler - but i could quite easily stick a bottle in my pocket and no-one would notice until the stock take....
NOT THAT I WOULD OF COURSE!!

It was a stallion that was doped wasn't it?

IF whoever did it had a vet contact then I suppose there's nothing to stop them getting hold of some. Could have been a vet or a veterinary nurse that administered it even.

You just never know with that sort of thing I guess.

To make perfectly clear, all the above is ifs' & maybes'. Nothing else.

I can't tell from the article whether whoever did it meant to kill the pony - maybe just to make sure it couldn't compete on the day - it actually said 'traces of pentobarbital' .

Whoever it was should be given a seriously good slapping! It must be illegal also (ie doping someone else's animal, not the drug)?

Yes, looks like it was stallion that is 'suspected' of being doped - sorry, I'm a bit outraged by it all but you are right as nothing has been proven!

It was relating to what I had put. Basically speculating it could have been a vet, veterinary nurse etc etc. Wanted to make it clear so people didn't think I was throwing round accusations.
