Recently, my 6 year old mare has started dragging one of her front toes and has squared off the shoe/foot on one foot. She does it when she is ridden and when she is being led. I have heard that it can be due to a lack of muscle/balance and even though she was only broken in in January, I don't think this is the case with her as she hasn't done it from the beginning and has only started it recently. Her saddle fits fine so I don't think this could be causing it either?

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this?

Hind toe dragging is more commonly caused by poor muscle development/weakness but I would be worried about front toe dragging.

Are her toes long? I would definately get vet to investigate this further if I were you

No, her toes are not long, she wears front shoes but is barefoot behind and she was reshod/trimmed about a fortnight ago. Yes I think I will, as I have heard that this can be a pre-warning of the onset of Navicular!
