I gave my Pony a nice bed of straw last night, when i was mucking out this morning I took out less than a wheelbarrow of muck, hardly any straw and left nearly no straw in there. He has eaten most of the straw overnight.

I don't need him putting on anymore weight, how can i stop him eating it? or am i going to have to change what he has for bedding?

Also posted in Stable Yard earlier and was advised to post it in here aswell.

erm, afraid so - I have the same problem with my boy. Tried allsorts, dirty bedding - spraying with jeyes fluid, disinfectant - he still munches his greedy way through it. Now costing me a small fortune on top of my livery bill(which straw is included) to bed him on nedz bedz pro.

Is it wheat or oat straw. Use to bed my horses on oat straw they never ate it had no coughing or colic made a lovely bed. Seems farmers don't grow oats anymore more into wheat which is lovely for horses munching, coughing gone onto rubber matting and shavings which is a pig to get rid of.

tonight i have put a new bed down with the bit that was left from last night on top, i doubt it will work though.

I don't want him putting on more weight and i was also thinking about changing bedding if it is going to work out around the same cost anyway if i can't stop him eating it.

Does he have anything else to eat? Stupid question really but he does have (soak if necessary) hay or something to munch on, doesn't he?

My mare loves Barley straw but tends not to eat the wheat straw which is good as the barley straw is more expensive !

In some parts of the country they feed straw as forage when good quality hay is in short supply - If his poos look ok and they are not to knitted I wouldn't really worry about it

(My mare did have colic last week but while being out 24/7 - she spent the night in after that and my mate who helped me out took a barley straw off the pile next to mine (thief

) and she munched it ALL not the best on a colic tummy but she's been fine since )
