I have decided that I want a pony. Don't ask me why, as I have no idea. I just want one!

So what sort would you peeps recommend for an adult (ie me!)?

I quite fancy a spotty one, or a Haflinger, but I've heard that Haflingers can be a bit bolshy like Welsh Cobs, and I don't want a Welsh Cob type.

Has anybody got any suggestions?

I probably won't end up buying one knowing me, but I am toying with the idea at the moment...

I've got a cobby connemara and he's just a dude. Not too well blessed in the brains department, but kind as anything, a real saint, and tough as old boots. Plus he seemed to enjoy that last summer, thought it was just a pleasant shower!

Don't know what you have against Welsh D's - there are good and bad examples of all breed and types. I had a Welsh D (not a very chunky one) that was a superstar - awesome jumper!!

New Forest. Without a doubt. They're intelligent, can turn their hooves to almost anything, and very hardy. Magic is NF (though not registered and I slightly suspect she may have section D in her somewhere, her knee action is very high), and is the most gentle yet fun pony I've met in a long long time.

You'll have to come and visit and ride one of the Highlands, just to see what you think of the breed - they are perfect ponies for adults.

Oooh yes, I could pick up that fridge freezer at the same time!

Love, love, love Highlands!
I was offered on on loan last year, but it was really small and it bucked like a mule.

Of course, the owner only told me it bucked AFTER I'd got on it...

Very expensive though aren't they?

LOL, a horse not too well blessed in the brains dept would suit me perfectly!

Have you got any pics?

A good well established one would be about £3,500 - but sometimes they come up for loan or part breds that have the weight and nice nature but a little bit more whizz can be cheaper. The ones I have are 14hh and 14.2 and neither could be called small.
The Highland Pony Society has a page on the website for advertising that is worth a look

I have a chunky 14hh New Forest - chestnut with flexan mane and tail (although its mud coloured at the moment. I'm 5ft9 and 10.5 stone. He is fantastic fun to ride - personally prefer riding him to either of my TB's. He jumps courses up to 2ft9. Chase me charlie's he has jumped 3ft 10 on a couple of times.

Sorry! Just personal preference as I've never come across a really well behaved one yet...

I have owned two - one, you could only catch with a shotgun, and the other was the complete opposite - get in the field and he would mow you down.

Have known plenty of others owned by friends, and I just do not like their manners...

A Hiighland would be excellent. Have you looked on Horsequest ?There is a really nce 3yr old on there and its Cheshire so not too far away from you

Aww thats a shame you'll have to come and meet Holly and you'll change your mind, she's a welsh d (albeit a small one at 14hh

) but she has lovely manners and is very well behaved!

She stands and falls asleep if you tie her up bless!

However we do have Mad Maddy (one of the other welsh d's) who is very bolshy and bargy and won't stand still, the complete opposite of Holly lol!

My Mum had a dales for years and loved him. She also had an overgrown connemara who was great - I used to pinch him for hunting! My hunter is half bred dales and is great!

It won't surprise anyone, least of all the_watcher, to know that I second her recommendation for Highlands. I took my daughter up the lane on our Highland, Nelly, this morning and despite the gale blowing all around us she marched on purposefully, looking around her all the time but not acting silly in the slightest.

She is my first Highland and I couldn't be happier with her. I am no lightweight but she carries me with ease so defininitely a breed suited to adults.

I have a 4 yr old Welsh D and she's great!
Brill allrounder and so much fun!
She's 15h and very chunky, her bolshyness is going now that she's leant a few manners..full of character and that's what i'd want from a pony!

this is he with my 10 year old daughter! He carries my great weight with no worries (and I am the best part of 12 stone) though I don't jump him or anything, just hack out with the littlies.
He looks a bit light behind on this picture, which actually he isn't, he also looks a dreadful scruffball, which actually he is.

Whats wrong with a Welsh D? They make briliant horses. Really are one of a kind with such massive personalities!

Highlands CAN be super as well, BUT they can also be stubborn gits!

If I were you, Id probably go for a nice Connie. Or a Welsh x Highland sort.
