Ive just called regarding a pony for sale with a Grand Prix rider, When I asked who the passport was with I was told they had lost the passport but the pony wasnt chipped so they would apply for a new one.

I questioned a copy of the original ?? No as they didnt know who it was registered with and there are many passport agencys so they would just get a new one. But the horse would have two passports, thats ok if the other one is lost ??

Please tell me Im not nuts thinking this is not ok ??

You can apply for a new passport if one is lost but the original PIO should be informed. If THEY lost the passport I am surprised they do not know the PIO. I have passports from four different PIO's and it is perfectly clear who the issuing authority are.

You see this is why the passport system is rubbish. Providing the horse has not been chipped anyone can get a new passport from any of the agencies. My horse has a passport issued by the miniature horse society and he now stands at 16.2
My vet has already said he will do a new wetherbys passport and chip him at the same time.

If it is with a Grand Prix rider...is it Bsja reg...if it is they would have details of passport holder...if they wont give you the details they will tell the owners...again if it has winnings any where near £50 it will have to have a height cert and for that it has to be passported and micro chipped....also do they have it insured...if so most insurance companys in fact i think all ask for the passport number and also even a copy...

It does seem odd that a) they dont know who the passport issuer is and b) why they have never applied for a replacement before now.

To be honest i think the whole passport thing is nonsense sometimes. Whe i bought my mare she was not passported or chipped but i knew the background and knew why she had never been passported.

When i had the vet out to do Ellie's first jabs she scanned her to check she wasn't already chipped and one was flagged up. The vet gave me the ID number of it and i asked her what i should do as i assumed that if soemone had gone to the trouble of chipping her she must be passported. Unbelieveably the vet basically just said to send off an application and not mention it as there are so many passport issuing authorities now it would be unliely to track down who she was passported with!

As it turned out through my own investigations and help from her old owner we found she had been chipped at the stud but the breeder sold her so the passport was never completed. Through this i traced all of my mares breeding and have been in contact with her breeder to find out about her parents which was very interesting.

Had i followed the vets advice i'd just have registered her again and never known anything about her! :)

I think there are still some poeple who just genuinely haven't ever got their horses passported for one reason or another and have simply come unstuck when they decide to sell, but you would expect more of a pony being sold by a seemingly knowledgeable owner such as you describe?

If you've lost a passport for a horse with no microchip and the original issuer is unknown to you, there is nothing you can do but apply for a new one.

However, since no horse can now have a passport unless it has a chip, eventually every horse will be linked to its original passport.

If you apply for a passport with a microchip number, its checked on the database and will prevent you getting a new one. You'll only be able to get a duplicate of the original. There are a lot of horses knocking about which are chipped but the database hasn't been updated with the chip number so in that case, you could get a new passport for a previously microchipped horse
