hi,
my 19year old 12hh pony had choke this morning and had the vet at 9.30am.
he is know eating a bran mash very sloppy with liquid parafin in.

but he still isnt passing any droppings,
i am very worried about him as i have owned him for nearly 10 years and he is the sweetest pony on earth.

any ideas on how to get him to pass droppings or any experiences of your own?

thanks

hi,
thanks,
i phoned the vet this afternoon and he said just to keep a close eye on him, and that it was good that he is eating.
he is outside in a little square next to my other pony near the house, i will try taking him for a walk and putting him in the horsebox in the morning, to see if he will pass any droppings.

thanks

If you know for sure he's not passed anything then I would maybe give the vet a call and ask their advice. Is he ok in himself? As MrsD123 says, it a may be worth taking him for a walk/trot. Can you hear any gut sounds if you put you ear against his stomach (i had to do this with my sister's horse the other week when he had a bit of gassy colic). As a rule I believe if there's rumblings going on then the gut is functioning ok. If no sound then that could suggest a problem

get him walking (marching) out to try and get things moving. try not to feed anything forage wise untill he has passed droppings.. know how you feel, my mare is a regular one for colic. she doesnt pass droppings for upto 9 hours after the vet has given her buscupan. lots of marching out gets her going again.

I agree with the others. I know it's getting late, but I would get on to the duty vet at your practice (you'll be referred onto another vet practice if there's no one manning yours at this time) and just get some guidance. And then, as everyone else hs said, get him walking, even if it has to be round and round his enclosure if it's too dark to be safe anywhere else. Gut rumbling is a sign that something is happening, but TBH I don't think I could distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' sounds - and I've had several with colic etc. over the years.

Don't be frightened to keep contacting your vet. That's what they're there for and I've never had a grumpy one yet, even at 2 am. Good luck and thinking of you.
