Hi folks my little chap has a rash under his tail/around his bum. It's like pinhead sized scabs like they have with lice bites. He had lice a few months back although we did clip him and treated with coopers and powder (battles powder which actually kills lice) every week for a month so pretty sure he doesn't have lice any more. We also worked him with pramox before Christmas and covered til end of this month (13wk wormer) so not sure what it could be. Any ideas?

Does he have a thick tail and wear a rug with a tail flap? If so it could be dermatitis caused by warm damp skin. Just remove tail flap (or sew it turned up) and plait the first 12" of tail.

Does, he have loose bowel movements? or is he having a lot of carrots in his diet?

The other thing is he having haylage instead of hay this can cause it too.l

I would speak to your vet and whatever you do don't use zinc and castor oil cream. If it is a bacterial infection it will exacerbate the problem. ( speaking from experience) . You need to find out exactly what it is and then you will know how to treat it.

Thanks folks, he has a very thin, fine tail and a no fill tail flap. We dont treat our horses very often because one is prone to laminitis.

We feed hay, no haylage for him and i dont think it's pinworm as that tends to be rubbing sores rather than pinprick. We have the vet due next monday so i'll as him to take a look then. Thanks folks :)
