Pony has sunburn

About 2 weeks ago or so I gave madam a blanket clip. She usually has a trace clip or little neck and chest bib clip all year round but it wasn't cutting it and she was dripping doing any sort of work in the heat. Her coat is already coming back through quite quickly so she's not bald or bare skinned.
However she is a skewbald and pink skinned under her white bits. I noticed yesterday she was very scurfy (she is always a bit scurfy even at the best of times) and today she has full scabs (no sores thankfully!) all over her shoulders, I'm assuming sun burn? :(
She lives out but there is plenty of shade should she choose to go in it!
I'm hesitant to buy a fly rug for her to wear as I suspect she will just cook in it with the temperatures we've been forecast? Is there anything I can do, any creams that she won't fry in?
 
If you are going to clip a pink skinned horse you do need to be prepared to either rug or bring in during day when the sun is out
 
yes this happened to my friends skewbald the weather was unusually hot in April and she was full clipped- you really need a rug. I have the aussie allrounder which is very cool.
 
Thanks all. I naively thought that as she's been trace clipped the last few summers with no ill effects that she would be ok. Plus when she was clipped it was whilst the weather was doing th very warm but overcast thing so I figured by the time it was brighter she would have enough coat through. Her coat is already coming back big time but it's obviously not enough and I do feel truly awful about it :( Off to source a fly rug and look at filta bac.
 
My pony burns on her white/pink skinned bits too and I bought the tempest plus fly rug. I get really paranoid about them overheating and this one seemed thick as it isn't a mesh material so was unsure but had good reviews so I bought it and honestly amazed by how cool she was underneath it from the UV resistant material. May be worth a try!
 
Our Grey pony has a lot of pink skin. The only time she has burnt has been in March / April when the sun is low and manages to get her muzzle as it is low enough to shine under the stable canopy. I now only put out at night in summer, as even if rugged I worry about uv fly mask with nose cover coming off. I use the gold sun cream on muzzle or kids sun cream factor 50.
 
Hi chaps - how is the pony doing? The reason I ask (other than that I'm a kind and caring sort) is that I've gone and done exactly the same with mine - the YO just texted saying my mare's back is really pink and sore from the sun. Poor wee thing! New fly rug bought and in the car ready to drop off this eve, and she's in out of the sun today, but I feel awful! How long has yours taken to heal? Blimmin weather!!
 
I have a skewbald as well and he is very pink skinned and also has photosensitivity so he is stabled during the day and out at night when the UV is low. When we go out competing this time of year I take out with my his UV reflective boots and UV fly rug to protect him when standing off the trailer
 
My 2 have had white fly rugs on in this heat they do come in during the hottest part of the day but they have not sweated under them, apart from one day when the horseflies were bad and they were running around but they were only a bit damp not soaked.

I will say I have some silver grey colour fly rugs these seem to make them hotter so I just use the white ones when it's really hot.
 
Thanks all. I spoke to the vet who suggested it might be contact dermatitis if not sunburn. On her advice I washed the area with hibiscrub solution and applied emollient cream after. Then 1 or 2 applications of aloe Vera gel the next few nights and it's all cleared up (touch wood!) She has had a uv reflective rug on since Tuesday too- a huge thumbs up to Hope Valley Saddlery for their amazing service!
