I’m looking after a pony for the weekend, I used to do her a lot but haven’t been in ages, they rang to say they were away last minute could I do her last night.
She lives out so all I do is check feed, hay and water.
This afternoon I got a text saying that she was very uncomfortable so they had a farrier out who thought maybe laminitis and to leave her in.
Id say they are super novice owners, in the nicest way, although they have had this pony many years they appear to have little knowledge. (She’s looked after!)
So I’m not supposed to start til tomorrow but obviously have popped up now because I can’t visit just once a day with her in.
She is screaming cushings, it’s a classic text book case. Coat like an absolute yeti and yes laminitic. she has a lot of grass, more than my two together would deal with.
Any good recommendations I can give where they can *hopefully get info?
The laminitis society?
I will give them the name of the vet I’ve been using because she’s been great with my cushings pony but want them to read and realise!
I don’t want to sound patronising or pushy, a quick text tonight/when they get home?

Can you not ring them and persuade them to get the vet out.
She’s ok right now, yes a little footy but In off the grass. My fear is that this will just continue. She will stay in til Monday when they get home and I will have spoken to/ sorted things by then. It’s not an emergency thing else I would have called them straight away.

I think if you haven't seen her in some while you could use that to express concern to them over the changes you saw in her and to begin to steer them on the right path with vet help. Not sure what it says about the regular help they have with her???

Are they on FB? Invite them to one of the laminitis pages. I did that and owner has been reading loads. What seems common sense often isn't to novice owners (grass intake!!)

Sel I don’t think they are, I’m certainly not friends with them if so!

Well no quite, I only know there is another regular person due to the fact I once rang them to say the pony had got loose and they were abroad.
I once looked after her and she had a tumour in her eyelid (that one I did get a vet out pronto)

I think yes, I’ll go down the haven’t seen her in over a year and suspect she has cushings, maybe look at this link and see what you think? *insert link
With a follow up text of “this is the vet who looks after my cushings pony she’s great and will arrange a test etc”

I mean I may be wrong but no pony has a full blown massive winter coat in this weather!

If the pony is in an active episode of laminitis then they should really be having a bit of bute (not just for the pain, but to help with the inflammation to try to avoid further damage). I think they should probably get a vet up now anyway, to assess this particular episode and to give them an action plan moving forwards, and then the vet will take it from there.

Update.
I spoke to them, they took it really well and looked up cushings online.
Vets visited, pony has been clipped, is still on a little bute, still inside but allowed a little leg stretch in hand.
Bloods done, results (and I’m not sure about levels and figures but obviously this is pretty major) were over 1000 ?
She’s started on the medication. Hopefully she will feel much better now.
Im doing her the next fortnight aswell so ? will see a difference.

Wowsers, 1000? I just got my pony tested and she came back as cushings positive with a result of 130 - apparently anything under 49 is normal!

That’s what they said! As I say I don’t really know what is normal or in normal range!
I had one tested a few years ago who was 28 and ok so yes it sounded pretty horrific to me!

Well done, mine was diagnosed with 1250 as her reading but Prascend got it down and the next test she was only 3 times the seasonal average and it's kept coming down since, we're normally about 1.5 to 2 times the seasonal average now.
