My best friend is devastated.

She put two, healthy, polo ponies in the field in evening. Final check 7.00pm - all ok. When they came in next morning 8.00 am one could hardly walk (shoulder) and she noticed the other was beginning to sweat.... One hour later, the mare was dead. The post mortum revealed she had bled to death. No organs were in any way damaged and she was a fit healthy horse. There seems no explanation for this at all. I wonder if anyone has heard of anything like this and may have a theory ?

The lame pony is so bad there is a discussion ongoing with the vet about having it shot as the best option.

There wasn't a mark on either pony, no kicks, no sign of distress or bites.

What do you think ?

I also think poison, bloods gone for tests. The implication of that is too horrific to think about. The fields are in excellent order, no ragwort or anything, so if poisons then would have been deliberately administered by someone during the night...

lameness in one and a severe internel bleed on the other would suggest that they either fought briefly/kicking in play etc...or managed to collide with each other. Is the lame one tender or brusied on the leg?If the mare bled out quickly you would not see bruising as her body wouldn't have a chance to develop.

A posion causing lameness is unlikely.Death yes..lameness no.

It sounds to me like theyve been hoolying round in the dark and have collided with each other. We had a colic referred to us due to unresponsive to pain relief, upon surgery there was nothing obvious to see until the surgeon was feeling round the organs and felt something abnormal, we used the arthroscope camera to view the liver on the tv screen and 1/4 of it had died off, we ended up removing the dead part of it. On talking to the horses owner it turned out that a few days before she had heard the horses galloping about the field and then a big thud. We came to the conclusion that he had run into another horse and the impact had damaged his liver.

Its well known in car crash victims that people can die after a car crash from hitting their abdomen against the steering wheel and a lacerated liver can make you bleed to death.
