Afternoon,

One of my youngsters just loves flings her water bucket over, she does it in the field when its getting low which is annoying but liveable but mostly chucks her water over when in stable.

I've tried different weight water buckets and also filling them very full so it's harder to fling but she's a skilled little chunk and manages it anyway.

She now has rubber mats so it's not destroying her bed to the extent it was but it's meaning the mortar of the bricks around the around her stable are constantly wet and slightly concerned it might wash away :eek3:

Any suggestions? When in the US the yard I worked with had hooks with rings on top to attach buckets too the wall meaning it's hard for a horse to get then off, anyone used these? Am reluctant to use a tire incase the little weasel get the bucket out and then damages her self on the tire.

Any ideas??

Fruity teacake for all

I hang my bucket from a chain but that won't stop my 'little darling' from pushing it around. It does prevent her from dumping the entire bucket in one go though, so it curbed the problem significantly!

I have one who does this - I kept hoping she'd grow out of it but she's still at it as a 7yo!

I got hold of some old tyres and now put her waterbucket in one of the tyres in the stable - so far she's not managed to tip it over as it's quite a tight fit and doesn't lift out easily. It's a pita when the bucket needs scrubbing but better than a soggy bed every day

don't laugh but i use really, really large buckets , the one outside is tied to a post but the one in the stable has very large rocks in the bottom then i don't fill it too high, he can slosh about but most of the water is contained as it's quite high on the sides and it's too heavy for him to pick up, bit drastic i know but this is the only thing that has worked, it does mean that i have a bit of a heave ho with the rocks but better than a wet stable every morning and the bloody horse banging the walls with his bucket!!

Has anyone ever had a horse get the bucket out of a tyre? She is a determined little worm and worry what damage she would do to herself with a lose tyre in the stable..... :rolleyes3:

Like the chain idea, I imagine she'd rattle it a bit which might keep her amused :)

Flat backed buckets work pretty well. Clipped to the wall. Use one of those oval screw type fasteners (sorry, can't think what they are called)

Attached to the wall? With the hooky things I mentioned earlier?

Yes. I will find a picture for you, my powers of description are pathetic.

Like this, you are probably familiar with them, this one is heated, best thing ever! But the design is the same for regular buckets. I imagine that you can get heated buckets in the UK now, if not, for heaven's sakes why not!

These are what I use for everything that needs fastening where a horse can play with it. I have used them for years, never had a horse figure out how to unscrew, or damage themselves with one yet.

So far mine has never managed to get the bucket out of the tyre and the tyre is chained to the wall so even if she did she couldn't hula hoop with it or anything.

one of mine does this weve stopped him by fitting the corner manger at chest height to the wall it holds about 3 buckets and he cant throw it

Tiny fuzzy has her bucket overnight stuffed into 2 old tyres on top of each other - they are bound together with rope. Stopped her immediately. 1 tyre was a challenge to her canny little ways, but 2 is 'boring' ;)

I still have a pair of tyres roped together that I poured cement into for a youngster yrs ago, v heavy to move when cleaning box out, but again didn't get trashed :)

To add, you can always try gaffa taping the top tyre of 2 (to prevent it being used as a 'rota-skip' if they are really determined, this has also worked.

Have found the round hooky thing

Not sure how safe they are? Never had any accidents in the US but looking at them now not sure.

Also found this which is a bit more like Enfys idea

:( Really, don't risk them. Neither of those, I know several people who have had horses stitched up due to accidents with both of those, statistically they were unlucky. Of course, many others have never had incidents, but that's the way it goes, the risk is always there.

I have been using the screwy things for years and years, never had an incident with those, except - when it is freezing, and the horse has inconsiderately drooled on them they do get frozen, but a bit of hot and heavy breathing or hairdryer thaws them out enough to unscrew them to change water. You can get them in any hardware store :)
