Pony needs front teeth removing. The vet has confirmed.

Any one any experience of having a pony with no front teeth?

My specialist vet dentist had removed the remaining 11 incisors from a EOTRH horse in one visit before he came on me.

My non EOTRH mare ‘only’ needed two dead and infected incisors to be extracted, and it took him as long as hers were reluctant to come out.

My mare needed more follow up visits before she was discharged than the other horse, who has gone to do very well, as has my mare 🙂.

How old is the pony ME? I know of can give them years more life but I also know someone who regrets having put her old horse through it.

She's dropped weight. Did yours weight improve after the bad teeth were removed??
Yes, massively. She must have been in considerable pain before hers were removed - I got her booked in as soon as she was diagnosed. The EDT had missed the signs completely, it was the vet dentist who who noticed it.

My mare just had two incisors out though and it wasn’t EORTH, it was a non related infection.

It looked proper gory at the time, but healed v.well once the residual infection had drained out. She was 17yo when they were removed. The sockets soon filled in with healthy tissue.

My 18 year old came to me missing a front tooth, we're not sure why, and seems to manage fine.

He has also just had a molar out, because it was fractured and a part of it was dead. The extraction was last week and he's recovered very well. He's actually put on weight already, and the vet was delighted with his healing when he had a check up yesterday. Not for EORTH though.

Yes..our oldie has two or maybe 3 front upper teeth missing…kicked out when she was a youngster. Dentist carefully floats her front teeth so they meet properly. She eats from nets and can pile weight on. She struggles over winter on very short grass but she’s 27 and is still going strong, fit and healthy.

I have a companion pony only about 20 and he only has one front tooth left, and is minus one tush and a couple of back teeth. They have been done over the last few years ie each visit he has a couple or three out as they become loose . He has lost a lot of weight but he needed to he can only suck and spit hay now. I don't have to restrict grass which is nice for him and his bucket feed of fibre beet & meadow cobs is a proper horse sized feed so all in all he is happy with his life. His teeth are done twice a year as are my other two so it is never to traumatic for them.

My old boy has had all his incisors out due to EORTH. He had them out in 3 surgeries, as they needed to be removed, most recently having all the lower ones removed in December. Each time he recovered well, eating fine and grazing effectively within minutes of getting home! Recovery has been about 3 weeks each time, daily mouth flushing and pain relief as prescribed. I use a specialist dental vet. For Coolie this has been as easy process, he is a good patient and was obviously happier post surgery. His teeth never looked too bad from the outside but each time were much worse than expected, despite keeping a very close eye on them.

Yes to the experienced it part.
Get it done properly, it works out cheaper both monetary and emotionally to get a proper specialist to come in and do the whole thing quickly and in one go. Don’t mess round with normal vets who think they can do the job, yes they might and I’m sure many do but the likely thing is that teeth will fracture during the process and for a pro that’s not an issue.

I wish I’d not let vets try before going all out and getting the specialists in.

Horse in question years later is doing well. He and I went through some pretty hellish times though first.
