My younger sister has two adorable mini shetlands, I towed them to their first show on Sunday and they came home with lots of frillies :) I'm now seriously hooked on Shetland showing and have pestered the other half into letting me buy one! Am I mad? I've got one ridden Dales and a Dartmoor hill which is more of a field ornament at the moment although a friends daughter rides him occasionally, current two are good doers so know how to manage weight etc the main problem will be keeping him fenced in! How much extra work is a 30 inch Shetland going to give me? Eek 😬

I remember when she got them! We both got ours as weanlings at the same time if I remember correctly... So her two girls should be 5 this year too!? How are they doing?

Of course you have to get one... Everyone needs a Shetland to wake up to!

I have to say that going from two to three ponies was a frighteningly big step in terms of work and costs, £50 for the farrier seems ok but £75 is a chunk, ditto the hay bill, teeth, vaccinations, wormers etc, I dread certain months where there are multiple things to be done.

Even picking out three lots of feet can be tedious and grooming three needs planning as opposed to just quickly whipping a brush over two

You need to be very organised even if the ponies are small and low maintenance

People did try to warn me that it wouldn't be easy but I was still shocked at the 'jump'

Having said all of that I wouldn't change things, I do love my three but I would certainly recommend taking off any rose tinted specs

It's not 3 it's 2 1/2 so acceptable. I have 2 1/2 too. Everyone should have a mini. Mine makes me laugh everyday. When Im old I will have a field full of them!

The most we ever managed entirely DIY was 5. Beyond that and you need some on full livery, or all of them on part. (Or a groom!) From 2 to 3 is actually a jump as WelshD has said. Two is entirely do-able and really quite cute. But 3 requires some work and planning - although it is still perfectly possible. However as meleeka has said it is only 2.5 so that is different. You don't have to worry until you get to 3.5....
