Pony on loan - real owner done a runner!

Ok folks bit of help please...

OH had T on loan with another horse. Other horse died several yrs ago, but we still have T. OH's ex organised loan, hugely unhelpful and says she can't find owners details... we have no idea how to go about finding the owner. No micro chip, no freeze mark.

Much as we'd love to keep her the situation has changed. Any ideas of how to track the owner down? She's been at his for the better part of 8yrs!
 
Don't you have the passport with the owners name and address in? Or if not at least know their name and what area they're in to look for them?
 
We know she came from cornwall but as to where the passport is your guess is as good as mine. I have a horrible feeling that it never came with her (i wasn't in the picture when the loan was sorted else believe me we'd be able to contact the owner!)
 
I would log the details with MHOL and ask for their advice re legal side of things.

Also, this way, should the owner come back saying "my horse was on loan and has disappeared", they would get directed to MHOL (hopefully) who could tie the two situations together
 
Brill shall do! Its unlikely they'll ever come forward as she's prone to being sickly. TBH the way she's going she'll probably end up being PTS :( (prone to lami, COPD that can't be treated with steroids, on human inhaler from vet atm as a last resort)
 
Poor old horse. If she is on her last chance from the vet anyway, and the owners don't care enough to keep in touch, I wouldn't be giving her back even if I knew where they were! Although thats probably not legal. I'd either keep her or PTS if she was bad enough. The thought of her being passed back and then probably to someone else in that state doesn't sit well..
 
Could you joing the Cornwall horse groups on Facebook with a 'Does anyone know this horse?' Some one would remember her surely :confused:

Def worth a go. She's a sweetie but a handful (seriously takes the pee when she can) but seeing her heaving and pawing because she's having such difficulty breathing is heart breaking :( you're right though, i think she'd end up being moved again to someone who didn't have the knowledge to deal with the lami and resp problems.

If this is the pony's condition - and medical intervention has not worked, put her down. As long as you have a letter from the treating vet indicating that was the best course of action, then you have no problem.

Agree with this basically.

Personally if this is the case then I wouldn't honestly be too fussed about finding the owners at this stage (8 years plus, I can't see the "real" owner being terribly compassionate about her/his horse TBH).

IF OP isn't able to keep her anymore, and can't find anyone to take her on, then TBH the PTS may be the more humane option.
 
If the pony is that ill it would be so cruel to unsettle her by moving her. Especially if you think she'd only get passed around.

If you can't keep her, being in the state she's in I'd PTS. Moving her around will more than likely make her even worse, it's not fair to put her through that.
 
I appreciate there may be good reasons but,IMO,doesn't say much for original owner if they haven't been in touch much/at all for last 8years... :(

This 100%

After 8 years with you the Horse will know you and feel comfortable in his surroundings. I wouldn't want to be moving him on. PTS whilst he is in similar surroundings. If you ever do find the owner, I would provide the letter form the vets.
 
Agree with the others, if the owners haven't kept in contact for 8 yrs it is unlikely they would want her back. Personally, i would pts if she is having such major issues, the trip from Birmingham to Cornwall would take 6hrs and could be very stressful for her. Do the right thing in a home she has known for 8yrs and is happy in.
 
Assuming that you don't need to get rid of her urgently, why not make some efforts to trace the owners and at least notify them that she will be PTS. You could post a "trace" thread on here, you could post on FB and contact some of the horsey community down in Cornwall. If you haven't found the owners by the time the horse either needs to be PTS for humane reasons or you can't continue to keep her then PTS but ask the vet to provide a letter of evidence just in case.

I think it is only fair to try and trace the owners, they might appreciate the chance to say good bye. They aren't necessarily uncaring, we don't know what their circumstances are or what attempts they may have made to find the horse. They may be gutted that the horse is "Missing on loan" and be trying to trace her.

But I think if you can't trace them then you shoul do the decent thing for this horse and PTS if her condition is as bad as it sounds. On the otherhand you could loan her to someone else if her condition is better than it sounds, just make sure you stay in touch and make it clear to the new loaner that there is an owner out there.
