It all started about 2 years ago when we returned from holiday to discover mini shetland had a very gooey eye and a puss like substance breaking out of his face after a few days of bathing we discovered he was only breathing out of one nostril so imidiatly took him to the vets. Because he is so small it was very difficult for the vets to find out what it was so they send us away warning us it could possibly be a sinius infection or even the start of a tumour so we started him on antibiotics and after a couple of weeks this seamed to clear it up and he went back to normal (so we came to the conclusion it was just an infection).
To try and cut the long story short it has happened once since then but not as severe (not alot of breath out of one nostril and just a little bit of goo out of eye). It is now back again and has been for a little while, we have got him on global herbs airways liquid which seems to be managing it and he seams more than happy in him self but just isnt as active.
So to get to the point has anyone else experienced this before? and if so was it just a thing to had to manage over the years a bit like COPD?
He is just a pet (although very loved!) so we dont want him to have any severe ops as i dont think he would cope (vet initially said he could have face cut open to find out what it was!)

Thanks x

vet initially said he could have face cut open to find out what it was!

Without x-raying first??

I would want a good equine dentist to have a look at the mouth, and also x-rays done to see what is going on with the head and jaw.

It may be nothing more serious than an infected tooth problem that can be easily rectified. But clearly, further investigations are needed.

I agree with amymay, it could be a tooth problem- a fractured tooth or food builds up between teeth causing an abcess.

I would have an experienced specialist equine vet look at him asap. A recurring chronic problem like that needs further investigation and treatment to resolve it.

Could be a sinus problem - camera up the nose first to determine if there is anything there, then an xray and only then drilling into the face. My vet thought it was tumour but it turned out to be an abscess.......

Drilled into his face (under local anaesthetic) and then flushed it all out - I suppose it came down his nose ??? He was in hospital for a few days, came home and I flushed it out twice a day for a month through a tube in the hole in his face and left the hole to heal over. Sounds gruesome but it's really not too difficult at all (once you've got over the poking a tube into the face)
