We are potentially looking for something for a 14 y/old girl to compete BSJA 90cm - 1.20m tracks on. She is 167cm and 9st and has been bringing along a 5 y/old 14.2hh pony since October. The pony is quite wide, and seems like the perfect size as she is not very long in the leg. She is now looking to compete, after a few years' break, and we are debating between looking at ponies or horses. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Which would give us more options at shows? And is it likely that a pony will be hopelessly outgrown in a year or so?

Thank you!!

the girl in q has nearly 3 years left on ponies! buy an up to height 14.2 and do the pony circuit!!!! 14 on horses with relatively little rider miles wouldnt be my first choice as she will be competing agaainst adults and a huge part of the fun is competing against, and meeting people of your own age!!!! and on the stay away shows the social side is very good! discos etc with people of the same age!

Personally, I would get her a horse, she can always do children on horses classes. That way she can get used to jumping horse tracks etc.

You could get a porsch? (a horse from 15h to 15.2 lol)
Not sure how BS works, do you not have junior classes or young rider classes that she could do?

Go and try a few smaller horses and some larger ponies, and see if one of them feels 'right'! The only problem I can think of with a horse is that it - especially if it's a chunkier type (WB, ISH etc) - might feel too wide if her legs aren't all that long. I know I can't get on with anything wider than a TB because my legs just aren't long enough!

As she's 14 she can jump in senior classes on a horse I think. Also can do most of the unaff series like trailblazers.

at 14 i think she would need an approval from a bs accredited trainer to jump horses! (could be wrong) at 15 she could do ponies or horses! but the fun is against people of her own age! i think children should do children classes! they grow up too fast why fast track them????????????

I would try both and see how she feels, I would say she is more likely to be with her age group riding ponies now and you only have a short while in ponies so I would take the opportunity while you can :D

She has all the time in the world to do horses. If you can bear to part with the pony in a couple of years (should that be non-negotiable) then go for a pony. We have taken ours into seniors as selling is out of the question. She has just got her fourth Newcomer DC in fact. We wish we'd found her sooner as we only had a year in ponies left... Ponies are just the best fun.

And anyone of the right age can get on a horse and hurl it round a senior class (sadly, in some cases). No approval needed - I think that's BE?
