My daughter's 7 year old gelding has always been a mucky so-and-so in the stable - poos everywhere then buries it/mixes it in so mucking out has always been a nightmare - until Tuesday! The yard has just switched to a new brand of shavings and since then he has undergone an amazing transformation. He will no longer poo on his bed, but on the rubber matting in front of it. He has weed on the shavings and he has shavings in his tail so we're pretty sure he's lying on it it but the bed itself remains immaculate and poo-free and I'm intrigued why this is the case. He is quite territorial, even riggy sometimes and a friend has suggested that maybe the shavings have a stronger smell which masks the smell of his poo so he prefers to leave them somewhere that other horses will smell his poo. I'm not complaining - mucking out is now a 30 second job, the only downside I can see is that he chucks his food around so might be prone to worms if he's eating from a floor where he's pooed but I can get a tyre or something to stop his feed being turned over.
So anyone come across this before or have an idea why this may be the case so I can offer a training school for the other horses on the yard!!!
