Pony rearing in trailer

My pony reared as we were travelling in the trailer the other day and got both his front legs over the breast bar....luckily i managed to free the in so it just collapsed and he became free but it was a very scary experience, has anyone any tips on how to prevent this happening again as i want to travel him to shows etc without a big stressful ordeal.
 
Was so scary, he was fine once he got his legs free from the bar and just stood there, but we didnt want to carry on as i hurt my wrist trying to free him. Will we just have to try him again as obv i cant not travel him.
 
has he ever done it before? to be honest if he has any sense he would have scared himself into not doin it again. will he still go on a tailer? + y did he rear in the 1st place?
 
Nope never done it before, and we laoded him back in when we got him home etc...a car over-took us quite fast and next thing he was up in the air.
 
He has travelled before with my other horse and they were fine, just a bit of a pain taking both of them to shows!...think only thing i can do is try again...is there no way i could modify the trailer to stop him doing it again?
 
hmmm what about putting a little bit of padding on the breast bar to make it a little thicker so he cant lift his leg over and that will make the room a little tigher then so itl be more compact, but that might scare him and he might panic... hmmm the best thing to do is just give it another go and make sure he is tied tight so he cant move around and fiddle around with his legs. good luck on your next travel!!x
 
I had one that did that.

Admittedly he was only a 12.2, but we cross tied him facing backwards with his bum against the breast bar, he travelled at an angle quite happily. He still reared (because he could, he was like that) but he didn't have anything to get his legs over so we let him get on with it, oh and we shut the top doors too, opened the windows and vents and he was fine.
 
Oh and another thing you could do, but i dont know if your trailer does it. on our trailor the partition can be removes so it leaves a normal trailer for one. if we have a horse that doesnt like traveling with the partition we simply pull it out and cross tie them in there. but i dont know if your trailor has this? just a though.
 
yeah, i can take it out, but then there is no breast bar etc...so they can go right to the ront of the trailer?...is that ok?

Did you have the front top door open??
 
If you do take out the middle partition don't just travel him like that, you need a breast bar. I don't know what make your trailer is but most trailer companies manufacture full length breast bars. Imagine if you had to stop suddenly no matter how tightly you cross tied him he'd still fly forward. Most likely hurt himself and/or scare himself so much you wouldn't get him on again.
My advice would be take him out again asap tied tightly and see how you go. If he has any sense about him he won't do it again.
 
For some reason one of mine has started doing this, my partner has had to lift him over on 4 occations on the way to a show a couple of weekends ago, which is no easy feet seeing as his a hw gypsy cob. There is no reason for this as he has happily travelled alone and with another horse for the past 3 1/2 years (since he was 5 months old!) so its not like he isnt used to it....
anyway back to the point...we have now passed the rope underneath the breast bar then tied to the tie ring as normal so that he can't lift his head high enogh to get his legs over, and so far has worked a treat

Hi, I have a 22yr old sec a who i have had since he was 4. Always been a bit of a cheeky boy and has always reared up when travelling. He walks on lorry or trailer first time no worries. but the minute you start going up he used to go and front legs over the breast bar in trailer. No better with company. The last time i travelled him was 6 years ago when i moved and i had to move him. I stripped the trailer, and cross tied him, haylage net in front and he didnt budge! i had a friend to drive all the way behind to keep an eye on what he was doing! I have always bandaged him to the top of his front legs in two seperate bandaging sessions whilst travelling just to stop him getting hurt! It never mattered how i tied him, where i tied him he would get his legs over bar. Also used to go up in lorry.
 
IM worried about tying the rope under the breast bar then onto striing incase he tries to lifts his head then panicks and it breaks, think im just going to have to try again with my other horse as he has travelled fine with her before.
