Pony rocking on all 4 hoofs?

Very well done to you for helping this poor pony. Maybe you could get something in writing from your "ex" to say that he's given her to you. If he tries to take her back, it might work if you threaten him with reporting to WHW. You will have evidence from your vet and farrier. Good luck with the pony, hope she recovers soon.

Laminitis or not, she mustn't be allowed to threaten you in the stable, or anywhere else come to that. If wriggling a rope at her doesn't get her respect then you need to up your game until she DOES respect you! You could go for the element of surprise and the second she turns her back on you leap forward with a huge shout and do a star jump at her. Be prepared for her to shoot, quivering, to the back of the stable! If this works, you have to be 100% consistent - every single time she turns her back on you, or even just when she starts to do it, do the warrior star jump thing. If you start only doing it sometime, you teach her to ignore you. If the star jump doesn't work you need to keep trying things out until you find something that DOES. I betcha 2 saucepan lids banged together every time would work wonders but it's not easy to always carry 2 saucepan lids. If all else fails, take a short crop with a nice smacky end in with you, tucked into your boot. Same as before: she turns-a her back, you give-a da smack on her arse. Every single time she does it, smack. I guarantee that after 24 hours max she'll be showing you more respect.

Well done on saving her life hun xxx

Well done on helping this little pony. I had a pony with laminitis and it was aweful,I did manage to control it,but had to take her to the river too cool her feet down.Kept her in as she would gorge on grass if I let her out overnight.
If I was you,id get something from your ex confirming that he has handed ownership of this pony over to you and GET HER PASSPORT.
Good luck, hope she recovers fully soon.

Oh dear, we need help again :(

She has stopped pooing altogether now. I find tiny bits. But last night there was nothing & this morning nothing. Hardly weeing as well. She is not really eating the hay but eating the Hi Fi with the Bute in.

I called the vet & she told me to take out the hay as it will block her up even more. I have to call her tomorrow & let her know if she has done her poo, if not she will come out to see her. I have the farrier coming to do her hooves as well. I will cancel him if she is like this.
I am so worried about her. She is not even crying out to ther other horses or even to me when I pull up. She just stands looking. She is moving around on her hooves lovely & I can tell she is not in pain. I asked if the Bute could of caused this to happen, but she said no.
I don't know if anyone on here as been through this & if so what you did to help them.

I've got two people telling me to put her to sleep :( this is breaking my heart & no way could I put her to sleep if there is a way to help her. I think the vet is getting a little peed of with me. I have called them nearly every day asking questions, but nothing seems to be happening.
My old mare went like this in the stable & the only way we got her to do her business was by putting her back in the field. But I can't with this little pony.
Does any know how long they can go without doing their business before it gets really serious?
Any help at all please. Many thanks in advance.

Not knowing quite how bad she is, so only an opinion, but I wouldn't worry too much as its very up and down with recovery

The eating may be a response to a massive change in diet, but as long as she is drinking, she will be able to cope for a few days.

You could up the HiFi to 3 small meals to make sure her gut is working, if she is rejecting hay. Stupid question, but are you using fresh water to soak her hay? If not it does go off and accumulate bacteria.

She will stop crying to the other horses, as she is getting used to being inside, so that's quite normal.

Thak you Cotswold, Yes I use fresh water to soak her hay. The vet said to stop her food & take her hay out. The reason for that, it will block her up even more so if she does eat the hay. I am hoping when I get back up to her, she as done something.

My friend used to have a chronic laminitic horse - if she had a bout, she always used to add bran & epsom salts to her feeds for a week or so - to help flush everything out of her system. The bran also kept the poo going as she wasn't that keen on her soaked hay.

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but is there a special bran for horses?
Thank you CrazyMare.

She just got a 20kg sack of bog standard bran from the feed merchant as far as I am aware.

Mare was 16h ish, and used to get a half scoop morning & night, with a measure of epsom salts (the measure that came in the tub) which were also from the feed merchants.

My boy did that a PC camp when he was only on hay. The solution is to get them moving (which you can't do) and Epsom Salts and Bran. You can get both from a feed merchant. Mine didn't like the Epspm Salts so I mixed it into water and suringed it.

Thank you so very much for helping. I will get to the shop right now & get some of this into her.
Thank you .

Just called my local pet shop & they have bran in :) I also have a syringe incase she doesn't take it.

Tezzy - the other thing if you are spending all this money on things, make sure you've got the pony signed over to you with both your Ex and his Cousin's signatures (£1 each?).

That way they cannot do anything horrible like take the pony once you've fixed her!

epsom salts aren't good for them. Magnesium is, you can get it from www.supplementsolutions.co.uk for about £16 and it will last at least 6 months. (magnitude)

Hope the wee girly gets through it. Laminitis is a horrid thing but my wee boys pony had it before we got him and after he had 1 bout with me, careful management made sure he never had it again.
You sound like you will do your absolute best for her.

Well done you for taking this pony on. It won't be easy or cheap but you'll have all the support in the world from HHO. Just keep coming on and asking and you'll get answers. I just hope you have time to read all the advice!

I agree that you should get the pony signed over. Just tell them the veterinary fees are already up to £200 - if you are lucky! - plus feed, bedding and farriery. That should spur them into a handover! As the legal owner, they are liable for the costs. And they wouldn't want to be linked with a welfare case, would they? Laminitis through neglect is an offence.

I wish you well.

May we have pics once she is yours?

Just a word of warning Be VERY careful with Bran Mash and Laminitics!

to make a good old fashioned bran mash (to get them pooing) you put a scoop of bran in a bucket with a table spoon of salt (any old salt) and a table spoon of black treacle. then add hot water and stir. Then add their normal feed and serve!

The treacle hides the taste of the salt and you can add the bute into this if you wait for the hot bran to cool down

but again be VERY VERY VERY careful with this. The sugar content in the black treacle could put her down hill again.
Ask a vets advice. And don't worry about calling them up all the time. You are their client, and you pay for their expertise!

I'd start without the epsom salts (& certainly no treacle!), just a plain bran mash may help a lot.

The other thing that's worth a try is liquid paraffin. If she'll eat a mug full mixed in her bran mash that would be great but if she won't then get a large syringe & get it down her that way.

Personally I'd be wary of the bute until you get her tummy sorted, but then I'm paranoid about it because one of mine has problems. Yes it's good for laminitis but it isn't good for the stomach, especially if she isn't eating. Has the vet given you sedalin or acp? That will help her feet & if she's more relaxed she may eat better.

Oh I've tried black treacle before - mega sweet tooth here, just never added it to a bran mash. Have added apple juice & honey for fussy eaters before tho.

I have told him that I want him to sign her over to me & I got a mouth full of abuse again. He said he was shocked that I thought he or anyone would take her away once she is well O-o
I have written a letter already for them to sign, but he is keeping out of my way. I am going through divorce at the moment with him & it as been horrible. But what they have done with this little pony as broke my heart more then he broke it.
I cannot stand any kind of cruelty to animals or humans. We should never allow pain or suffering to any life form. I know a lot of folk do & don't care. But I can't do it. I will do everything in my power to help her get well. I will never allow him or anyone to take her now. I would fight all the way. I will deffo make sure he signs my letter & I will go to his work if I have to.
The vet fees, shavings, feed & head collar, lead rope & ferrier have come to over £300. My petrol is OTT. I am struggling at the moment. But then I know people who cannot afford to own 1 horse & go without a lot & work all hours. So I know how lucky I am to be able to do this.
I cannot thank you all enough for the help & like you said brighteyes, "you'll have all the support in the world from HHO. Just keep coming on and asking and you'll get answers." That means so much to me. This is the first place I came to & asked for help. I have not been disappointed. I have had some great advice. Most have said to get him to sign & I will do. For the ponys sake. I really need to get her a name lol. I keep calling her babe, but I need a name for the passport.
Thank you all for your kindness & for saying how good I am for taking her on. But I know with the response I have had from you all. You would have done the same as me :) I have taken pic's of her & will have to try & post them. She is lovely. I was grooming her tonight & she loves it. She as not turned her self round on me since yesterday lol She seems to be different & just wants to be next to me when I go into the stable.
I took the bran but she didn't like it at all. I had to use the syringe & then I got the rest of the bran & fed it out of my hand & she took it. I kept fulling my hands with water & after a while she started to drink it. That made my night.

I have never heard of feeding treacle before lol I called the vet & asked about the bran & they agreed. She said to make it runny & it should help her.
So fingers crossed in the morning she will be back on track. If not then I will call the vet out. I have cancelled the ferrier & will get him out hopefully next week to her when she is feeling better.
Thank you all soooo very much for helping us :D

Everyone loves a trier! Many of us know only too well how much work is involved in sorting these little laminitics out - often for no more reward than them getting well enough to carry on plaguing us with their needs and demands. It can be a lonely fight and it's a fight often long and sometimes lost just when you think a corner is turned.

Please stick around, ask whatever questions you like and we'll do our best to help you and Babe.

I've only just seen this thread. The pony is lucky to have you to help her. Its so lovely to see someone really trying to do the right thing and also following all advice, calling vet etc. I hope she comes through it ok.

The non pooing could just be a lack of food (no food no poo!) if she really isn't eating the hay. Hopefully she has been to the loo overnight and you can give her a bit more to eat today - try more Hi fi, so at least she is eating something.

Also, I know all about soaking hay for 12 hours but personally, if she really isn't eating any of it, I would start off by soaking for less (hay soaked for 12 hours really doesn;t look nice does it) and see if that helps. Even if you end up giving her less, its better that she eats a bit of less soaked hay than non at all.

The ex isn't really worth talking about (well the words I might use aren;t appropriate!) Just make sure you get the passport in your name.

Good luck to you both.

Just another thought, when ponio is better, maybe get some electric fencing and pen a little bit of paddock off for her. Put your other horse in to eat any long grass down, then she can be turned out in a small area with little grass. More of your money I know but its how I kept my laminitis prone pony and it is very important to restrict grazing.

Great news :D :D
I went to her early this morning & she had done the business lol
I was so happy & she even cried out when I got out the car. She had stopped that the last few days. She was looking a lot happier in herself.
I took a little more bran to her with some Hi Fi mixed in. She ate half of it & then my son fed her the rest out of his hand. I then put hay in & she went straight for it. She started to drink the water without any help from me also.
Trouble is , she started with the spinning around with her ears back at me again. I did the star jump & yelled, but she did it more :S
She asn't kicked out at me but is warning me. I really don't understand why she is doing this. As I said before, she used to do this in the field & then stopped.

It is so good to come here & tell you the good news & to thank you for the bran advice. Other wise I know I would of had the vet out again today.

Thank you brighteyes. I know your right. It is going to take time to get her back to how she should be. With the help from you all on here, will help her get back.

I have been looking at electric fencing on ebay. I want to cut the field down now for the horses. They have a massive field (10 acres) & after this happening to little one, it scared me. I don't want to see it happen to the others & they could do with losing some weight. I want to try the Paddock Paradise set up. I need some wooden post but cannot afford all wooden post, so I will have to mix in some plastic post & then run the electric tape along.
