Pony Sitting Down - is this normal???

I am a newbie to the forum but have lurked like lots of others and decided to take the plunge and ask an odd question.

Our 14.2 appy-x has a fondness for staying in the sitting position when getting up from a snooze - he will stay like that for a minute or two - occassionally throwing in some yoga stretches before hopping up to his feet. Is this normal? I have not seen anything other than shetlands sit like this. Makes me laugh everytime though! :D

Our little Poppy always does it when rolling, she sits up and walks round on her front legs rather than rolling over. And no, she hasn't got a pelvis or back problem, had it checked out when we first realised that was what she did!

Yep - my new hairy pony just lurves sitting like that in the field, especially if he's been flat out snoring beforehand

I have to say, I found it pretty odd at the beginning because my horse of 20 years has never done anything like it lol :D

That's exactly how my old mare rolled too. It took such concentration, especially as she got older, and sometimes she sat on her tail and found it even harder! Loads of people used to panic, thinking she couldn't get up. I only ever saw her roll over in the normal manner once in the 18 years I had her and that was because she rolled on a slope and gravity took her over. She sat up and looked around and it was clear she was completely perplexed as to why the view had changed!! I'd love to know why some do it this way. Don't they copy the others? You would think rolling over is totally normal and natural for just about any animal.

It's not just Shetlands haha! My Belgian warmblood does this all the time. Makes me laugh to see him sitting there like a giant dog! :D
 
We have one on the yard who does it, but mainly as he has sweet itch and does it to scratch his nether regions. It's the only part of him that isn't / can't be covered and it's red raw by the end of the summer bless him. His owner has tried everything to stop it but hasn't found anything yet the poor thing.

My mini shettie does it all the time! I wish I had photos but he always scrambles to his feet if he sees the phone or camera. He's pretty good at wiggling to scratch the bits he can't otherwise get too and sometimes when he's flat out he'll let me sit next to him and scratch his tum - just like a big dog :D
