Pony stallion to Large mare advice please

A very knowledgeable friend of mine has suggetsed breeding my 16.3 hunter mare to a connemara stallion. He has suggested foals normally take the height of the mare and I would like something perhaps a little smaller but still with hardiness and soundness. although she is a hunter she is a little light on bone and doesnt cope well with hard ground which has been a problem. Has anyone bred a 14.2 to a larger mare and if so what have the results been. She is a maiden so that is also a concern as I have heard first foals can be smaller??

first foals are often smaller, certainly in my limited experience anyway.
a pony stallion on a bigger mare is supposed to be fine, i knew someone who did this and managed a natural covering by standing the mare in a small ditch!

Having done work at a stud I doubt this would cause I problem, as kerilli said they use small ditches to put the mare at a lower angle. One of the stallions I have worked with is only little and every mare gets put in a little bowl, but contact the stud and see what they think.

And I have been told the little stallion mounted a mare, and covered her with all 4 legs in the air!

My 14hh New Forest stallion covers TB mares (up to 16.2hh) without any problems. The foals reach 15.2-16hh

Thats good to know, what are the advantages of introducing some pony blood. My mare is not the best of movers so I wanted to breed some nice movement into it, initially thought about warmblood but now my friend has suggested connemara im seriously contemplating this.

If you look at the European performance ponies/small horses and one of the 'famous' warmblood stallions (it might be 1 of the Sandros stallions if I remember right has a NF dam) you will see a lot of Connie & New Forest blood lines. Both breeds are versatile performers, quick learners but sane & sensible. Adding this into horses tends to produce very performance orientated off spring.

Stud owner for the stallion I used said she had dug holes in her school, and stood the pony stallion on banks before now. All in all, he seemed to know exactly what his job was and manage quite well!!

If your mare has troubles with soundness I would ask why you would want to breed from her and pass this on?

I have spoken to my vet and farrier as she has had x rays both have said her condition is not hereditary so wouldnt be a problm.

we have covered three tb mares this yr with my 13.3hh nps stallion he managed all on his own one is 16.3 and she is in foal to him

thats great, can I ask have you seen what the off spring have been like or is this his first year of covering?

Hi, I know of a very well bred warmblood mare that has had a foal this year by Hilken's Black Delight (german riding pony stallion). I believe the result is really nice. I think the mare was AI'd though so there were no issues over his or the mare's safety.
