Hi all, i have a pony who i has started to suck his tongue, its as if he is drinking in mid air....anyone got any clue of why he is doing this?

I have sold a pony recently that does that. No idea why he has always done it so i suspect he was weaned too early and this is a habit from that. Doesn't seem to affect him in any way, he does it mainly after he has eaten.

my welsh cob does this after treat esp after a mint.Only time he does it tho doesn't windsuck or crib
It doesn't cause any problems other than silly faces so just leave him to it He's 26 and never been ill (touch wood)

Can you describe his stable management routine to us please?

Might be something in that which has caused him to do this as displacement behaviour :)

in response to his stable management, he is stabled throughout the day, and out all night, when in he has hay and a small feed and lots of water and a big bed, toys to keep him occupied. He is a cheeky chappy at the best of times and he is only 4, currently being broken so hes having lots of new things happen. he is stabled next to other horse. i did wonder if he maybe did it as he knew food time was coming up?

One of mine does this, he kind of sticks tongue out a bit, holds between teeth and sucks. He also sometimes sticks tongue out of side of mouth, and curls it round up to touch his face. He is a bit odd.....

Often connected with being weaned too young (which is a possibility with mine) and stressful experiences as youngsters - which is a certainty with mine. It doesn't affect him and he does it MUCH less now that he lives out 24/7. He used to do it most while tied up outside stable.
